Christopher’s Cake Shop

With outposts in Kogarah, Miranda, Mascot and Surry Hills, Christopher's Cake Shop is something of an institution in Sydney, having originally opened in 1955. In the nearly sixty years since, not much has changed in that its famous cakes are still made to delectable perfection, though you can order online now. On the list you'll find everything from classic chocolate mud cake and tiramisu through to carrot tea cake and apple pie.

Baked Patisserie

It may be a relatively small, boutique patisserie and café, but taste belies the size of Kirrawee's Baked Patisserie. Owned and run by pastry chef Adam Johnson and his wife Emma, Baked offers cakes, sweets, pies, sausage rolls and sandwiches, all made daily on site alongside Allpress espresso. The real specialty here though are the sweeter pieces, with brightly coloured macarons (made with no artificial flavours), cronuts, lemon tart, chocolate and salted caramel tart and caramelised vanilla slice vying for your attention.

Having shaped eyebrows for over twenty years, Sharon-lee Hamilton Clarke is undoubtedly on of the country's best eyebrow artists, working from her Woollahra salon as well as intermittent visits to Melbourne, New York and Los Angeles for dedicated clients. This is no ordinary brow bar but a true luxury experience, with fresh juice, coffee, champagne and canapés part of a brow treatment and shaping. Rocks Brewing Company

Very few industrial operations still exist in Alexandria on the outskirts of Sydney's CBD, but since 2008 Rocks Brewing Co has maintained its state-of-the-art, first-of-its kind craft brewery, growing to include its own on-site bar. Inspired by the shady characters that called the first colonial settlement of Australia home, the brews include red ale, pale ale, golden ale and lager, amongst others. The bar is open from breakfast till late and serves American-style cuisine like slow-roasted pulled pork and Louisiana hot wings, all perfectly washed back with a beer.

Hidden in Regent Place off George Street in the CBD, Chefs Gallery claims to offer a Chinese dining experience like no other, and certainly its pan-Chinese cuisine, creative 'Chapas' (Chinese-style tapas) and signature handmade noodles and dim sims are unique. The restaurant's menu is structured in a casual format with no specific entrees or main courses, allowing you to taste a broad range of small portions with friends whilst witnessing the noodles being made behind the glass windows of the kitchen.

Madame Nhu

Restaurant and bar Madame Nhu is inspired by the Vietnamese-French mash-up of street food found in old Saigon, housed in traditional villa-style interiors in Surry Hills. Here you'll find baby banh mi 'sliders', with house-made mayo, pate, coriander, shallots, pickled carrot and meats like caramelised chicken, grilled pork and BBQ duck; vermicelli salads with chilli lime vinaigrette and grilled beef; and silken tofu with Sichuan pepper salt and chilli.

Part experimental art space, part live music venue, but bar-cum-disco, Oxford Art Factory is a staple of Sydney's nightlife scene for the young and hip. The Live Art Space can suitably host up to 500 revellers and has welcomed international acts such as Sky Ferreira as well as burlesque and vaudeville performances. The Glenmore Hotel

Built in 1921, this iconic Sydney pub has stood the test of time, most likely due to its 180-degree views across Sydney Harbour and the CBD. The result of over 30 years of collective experience in fine food retail, husband-and-wife couple Peter and Annette Quattroville opened Fourth Village Providore in Mosman serving some of the country's best, freshest produce. On site is a walk-in fromagerie, a delicatessen, fruit and vegetable market and a pizzeria. A special touch is its house-made olive oil and condiments, made from its own olive tree farmland in the lower Hunter Valley.

Ramblin’ Rascal Tavern

The Ramblin' Rascal Tavern is conveniently tucked away on Elizabeth Street, just across from Hyde Park, and has proven hospitality pedigree behind it. A throwback to the 50s, Daisy's Milkbar in Petersham is one of the cutest little cafes around! Step through its musk-pink doors and be swept away into a world of childhood favourites (such as cordial, caramel milkshakes and take-home lolly bags). For the grown ups, on the menu you'll find Double Roasters coffee and breakfast and lunch staples including: pesto scrambled eggs with Persian fetta; BBQ pulled pork sandwich with slaw; and the 'Harry' jaffle of baked beans, cheese and mixed herbs.
