The weekend is here—hurrah! And we all know what that means: time to indulge. And if your local just ain’t doing it for you no more, it’s time to broaden your horizons! To help you on your merry way, here are five cafes and restaurants to visit this weekend. Let the wining and dining begin!

Geeks On Sainsbury

Mt Albert

Kick-start your weekend at friendly neighbourhood café, Geeks On Sainsbury. We’re big fans of the café’s all-day breakfast menu featuring an oh-so yummy (and pretty) granola, four bagel offerings (go for the wasabi tuna jalapeno option—it’s damn tasty) and waffles stacked high with all the goodies. Where have you been all my life, maple peanut butter? They also have THREE eggs benedict dishes on the menu. We can’t go past the benny with Pokeno bacon, sautéed kale, beetroot puree and layered potato. There’s outdoor seating available and a decent range of magazines to flick through. Bless your cotton socks, Geeks On Sainsbury.

The Commons

A hop, step and a jump from Takapuna beach you’ll find The Commons. We could quite happily spend the entire weekend drinking our way through their extensive cocktail menu in their outdoor courtyard. Graze on the bar snacks or grab a table inside and have a main meal. We love both the smoked lamb rump and baked pork belly. Oh, and FYI their dessert menu is not to be missed.

The Garden Shed

Mt Eden

The Garden Shed is quite possibly one of the most beautiful eateries in Auckland. Visit for a weekend brunch, lunch or dinner. If visiting during the evening, start with the chicken, prawn and chorizo wontons before digging into a main of ricotta and coriander tortellini with sundried tomato, onion, olive and halloumi salsa. If you’ve still got room for dessert the apple and berry hazelnut crumble is a crowd-favourite.

Matakana Market Kitchen

Further afield is Matakana Market Kitchen. With delicious breakfast, lunch and dinner menus, it’s worth making a trip north to the river-side eatery. There’s something for everyone with the menu divided into sections such as something fruity, something leafy and something hearty. We love the big breakfast-style market grill with all the trimmings: eggs, ‘shrooms, sausages, tomato, black pudding, potatoes, toast and, of course, bacon. There’s an extensive drinks list with smoothies, wine, beer and cocktails on the menu. Heck, they even have a kombucha martini!

Wise Cicada

Health-food enthusiasts amongst us will luuurve the fare from Wise Cicada. The health food store has an on-site café that caters to all your dietary needs. Visit over the weekend and they have a cooked breakfast menu including organic gluten-free pancakes, scrambled tofu and their renowned organic baked beans. We love their gluten-free bircher muesli made with nuts, seeds, apple, coconut milk and orange juice. It’s then topped generously with house-made coconut yoghurt and blueberry sauce. Their cabinet food is absolutely divine so grab a treat to take home on your way out the door.
