Another long weekend? Keep ‘em coming! If you’re hanging about the big smoke this weekend you might as well fill it with one of life’s greatest of gifts—food. To help you navigate Auckland’s eateries, we’ve complied this handy list of five cafes and restaurants to wine and dine at this weekend. Happy days.

Artwok Eatery & Bar

If you think Chinese food in Auckland is just takeout and MSG, you clearly haven’t been to Artwok. This contemporary Takapuna restaurant whips up tasty, authentic Chinese dishes using top-notch NZ ingredients and they’re definitely something you need to get amongst this weekend. After all, who can resist crab meat wontons, North Eastern crispy pork and tender wagyu beef? Wrap things up with deep fried Kohu Road ice cream for sweet, sweet ending to a cracking Chinese meal.

Major Sprout

Auckland CBD

Holding out for an epic long weekend brunch? Course you are! Graham Street’s Major Sprout is exactly where you need to do it. This café oozes cool and serves up the likes of green eggs bene, acai bowls, fancy pancakes and the almighty Crunchy Gentleman—a free-range ham and provolone toastie with three cheese béchamel and date chilli chutney. We vote you keep things naughty with a Peanut Buttercup smoothie and walk away with a raw Mars cheesecake. Weekend calories don’t count, right?

Phil’s Kitchen

Meet Phil. When you’re looking for a fine but not too stuffy dining experience, he’s your man. Pop into Phil’s Kitchen this weekend and prepare to be amazed. This Kingsland restaurant’s European menu with a Kiwi twist changes on the reg, evolving alongside the seasons and whatever produce is best. However, you can expect the likes of maple cured kingfish ceviche, smoked loin of beef and chocolate salted caramel parfait. Whatever you end up with, we can guarantee it will look too pretty to eat.

Coco’s Cantina

K Road

The Coco’s Cantina crew are an awesome bunch. Not only do they create some of the best rustic Italian food in Auckland, their K Road restaurant couldn’t be more welcoming if it tried. Coco’s motto is ‘be kind’, which you’ll see plastered across their tees and through their friendly service. On the food front, dig into chicken liver parfait, goats cheese ravioli, slow roasted pork belly with Italian slaw and an absolute must—a side of crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside polenta chips. There are some great crafties and wine available as well as a perfect Aperol Spritz. Cin cin!

Long weekends are made for two things—beaches and brunch. Head to Taka beach (weather dependent, obvs) and wriggle your toes in the sand before wandering up to Zomer for leisurely brunch. Here you’ll find an all-day menu featuring Dutch pancakes, herbed scrambled eggies, grilled halloumi salad and the legendary layered garlic bacon sammie. Wine is on standby if you fancy a vino with ocean views. Go on, it’s the weekend.
