No weekend is complete without a hearty pig-out or two. Chances are you’ve conquered the menus at some Auckland’s best restaurants and need to branch out.

To help you do just that, we’ve compiled a hit list of five cafes and restaurants to visit this weekend. Wriggle into those stretchy pants and BYO appetite because some serious eating is about to go down.

The Culpeper

Princes Wharf

We’re all friends, right? So let’s be honest here. Weekdays are for watching what you eat (except for #treatyoselftuesday, of course), weekends are for getting the bibs out and demolishing food like there’s no tomorrow. And in our humble opinion, The Culpeper is the place to partake in such an activity. Don’t get us wrong, this Princes Wharf bar and eatery is a classy establishment, but they defs don’t mess around with their kai. Opt for hapuka sliders or Asian style prawns followed by a huge hunk of beef brisket and chipotle maple pork belly. If you have room, then round things off with molten chocolate pudding—a sweet, sweet ending to a stellar dinner.

Herne Bay

An oldie but a goodie, Andiamo is one of those restaurants you should have dined at if you call yourself an Aucklander. They’ve been dishing out fine fare for 30 years and never seem to disappoint. Pop in for a fancy brunch of Andiamo French toast, Westmere Butchery sausage duo (pork and apple AND beef sausages) or benedict of eggs served not on bread but a flaky toasted croissant. We’re impressed. Dinner is a chance to sample a few tipples from Andiamo’s famous wine list and embark on a three-course culinary journey. Cin cin!

Scratch Bakers HQ

Auckland CBD

Pies, brioche, slices, donuts—you name it, Scratch Bakers HQ has it. Known for providing baked goodies to some of Auckland’s best cafes, this Graham Street spot also understands the importance of a leisurely weekend brunch. Here you’ll find the likes of salted churros with manchego cheese, serrano ham and a poached egg, spanner crab omelette, and a potato waffles with beetroot cured salmon and horseradish. Yep, Scratch Bakers HQ push the brunch boundaries and therefore they’re our kinda people.

Are they sammies? Or are they burgers? Whatever they are, they’re total perfection. Whether you’re feeling a bit dusty this weekend or a sit down brunch is out of the question, Ceremony will fill the void with one of their genius brioche buns. Sink your teeth into the #2, pork and fennel sausage, over easy egg, cheddar, slaw and sriracha mayo, or experience the beauty that is their pistachio nut butter toast. There’s also Flight coffee on standby for a caffeinated slap in the face. A ceremonial occasion indeed.

Miso-glazed eggplant cravings are no joke. Don’t you even try to ignore them. Instead, make your way to contemporary Japanese restaurant, Ebisu. This Britomart eatery serves some of the best in town alongside crisp soft shell crab, dumplings, fresh sashimi and chicken karaage. We thoroughly recommend the Miss Wednesday cocktail made from shochu, rose and lychee liqueurs, fresh lime and a touch of vanilla. Have at least two cos y’know, it’s the weekend.
