Aucklanders and burgers—it’s a love affair that just won’t die. We’re always on the look out for the next juicy burg to sink our teeth into and, dear readers, we’re pleased to announce that Auckland’s newest burger joint is something to rave about. Meet Burger Geek, the Symonds Street hub flipping some of the best burgers in town.
The brainchild of husband-wife duo Peter and Pene Barton, Burger Geek aims to inject a fast and casual foodie attitude into Eden Terrace. Living in the area, Peter noticed that it was lacking on the burger front, so he decided to take it into his own hands. Having run a slider food truck in Wellington and with a passion for American food, it made sense that burgers would be the star of the show.
Walk into the place and you’ll be greeted with an American diner-style menu board. There’s badass hot wings (honey sriracha is our pick), burgers and a stellar line-up of sides. We’re talking taco egg rolls, mac’n’cheese balls, bacon end and cheese croquettes, onion strings (not to be mistaken for onion rings) and the obligatory shoestring fries.
While you’ll be tempting to order the lot and chow down, it’s the burgers that need your attention. There’s eight burgers to choose from, all 100 per cent worth a try. Standouts, however, are the Mustang and the Swanson. The Swanson combines buttermilk fried chicken with kimchi aioli, slaw and cheese, while the Mustang features two Angus and Wagyu smash patties (pressed on a grill to create a delish caramelised effect), house smoked bacon, cheese, onion strings and bourbon BBQ sauce.
Vegans, Burger Geek has also got your back. The Zim is jam-packed with black bean and brown rice, shitake jam, lettuce, fries, tomato sauce and veganaise. All the sauces—apart from the tom sauce and Franks Buffalo—are made in-house by the Burger Geek crew.
Yep, just when you though Auckland’s burger scene couldn’t get any better, Burger Geek crept on in—and we couldn’t be more chuffed. The place is pumping, the people are lovely and the burgers are nothing short of epic. Get there, stat.
