We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, Auckland is one hella awesome city. We’ve got beaches, waterfalls, volcanos, gardens… Heck, we’ve even got a pink (yes, pink) cycleway. All these oh-so wonderful things just make us wanna whip out our phones and get our Instagram on—they’re just so pretty! To give you some Instapiration this weekend, we’ve rounded up the most Insta-worthy spots that are guaranteed to rake in the likes.
Nelson Street Cycleway
Leading the pack of the most Instagramable spots in Auckland is everyone’s fave Nelson Street Cycleway. Located in the heart of the CBD, this hot pink beauty is easily accessible for all you inner-city slickers. Post a shot of this bad boy and we guarantee you’ll get the people double tapping. Seriously, whenever we post the cycleway on our Instagram, it absolutely blows up—and for good reason too! Only the coolest cities have magenta bike paths, right?!
Despite what TLC advised us against, we can’t help but chase waterfalls. It’d be rude no to when there are so many Insta-worthy waterfalls throughout this city of ours. An Urban List and Instagram fave would have to be Piha’s Kitekite Falls. Follow a 40-minute loop-track to access the bottom of the waterfall and get snap-happy.
This leads us to our next point of interest—our much-loved Piha Beach. As far as beaches go, this spot has the X-Factor. The wild west coast beach boasts rugged surf, untouched native foliage, spectacular sunsets and the ultimate star of the show: Lion Rock. There’s something photo-worthy in every direction. BYO selfie stick and visit this weekend.
Oh how the people love the Domain Wintergardens. Established after World War I, the gorgeous complex is a protected heritage site—and we’re grateful it is! Here you’ll find two glasshouses, a courtyard complete with a pond as well as an old quarry bursting with ferns. If you’re big on all things flora and fauna, this is the spot for you—there are flowers on flowers on flowers! Our fave feature is the ginormous lily pads—they’re seriously huuuge.
Keeping with the garden theme, we’ve gotta mention Wright’s Watergardens. This stunning spot has it all: winding pathways, blooming gardens, native bush, tranquil ponds and a whooole lot of water lilies. As an added bonus, it’s also home to the Mauku Waterfall. Gram a scenic shot or try to take a selfie with one of the many animals that also live here #alpacasofinstagram.
Auckland wouldn’t be Auckland without Rangitoto Island sitting pretty in the Hauraki Gulf. It’s an Insta-fave—#rangitoto has been tagged just shy of 28,000 times. Gram the island from mainland (Mission Bay and Takapuna are both great vantage points), or do one better and set foot on the island itself. Lace up your walking shoes and climb to the summit of the island for a good ol’ #fitspo selfie.
Te Henga Walkway
Get both your hike and gram on by walking the Te Henga Walkway. The clifftop walk extends 8km from Bethells Beach to south of Muriwai Beach. This stunning spot is well off the beaten track, making it one of Auckland’s best-kept secrets. You won’t find many people in this neck of the woods, so no need to worry about being photo-bombed as you take snaps of the rugged west coast. No filter required.
Our hearts flutter with delight when we stumble upon a #petsofinstagram shot. Up the ante and post a snap of one of Auckland Zoo’s adorable wild animals. The zoo is popular on the gram with #aucklandzoo being tagged almost 12,500 times. The ca-ute meerkats and friendly giraffes are particularly Insta-worthy. We’d double tap that.
Last but certainly not least is Auckland’s iconic Mount Eden. There aren’t many cities in the world that have a legit volcano just down the road from the heart of the CBD. Walk to the summit and peer into the volcano’s spectacular crater while taking countless photos. We’re particularly fond of a carefully timed jump-shot with the city’s skyline in the background.
Auckland also serves up delicious Insta-worth meals. Check out Auckland’s Prettiest Dishes to see what’s good.
