This Must-Try Fried Dish Is Popping Up For One Month Only

Here at Urban List we’re all for a good pop-up. But to say this is simply ‘good’ would be a gastronomic understatement.

For one month only, from July 1–31, a fried dish of delicious proportions is hitting our shores courtesy of Auckland Fish Market. In collaboration with Estrella Damm beer and culinary legend Morgan McGlone, they are serving Estrella Damm Beer-Battered Seafood—a Kiwi take on classic soul food.

Meet Morgan

Born and bred in Tokoroa, Kiwi chef Morgan McGlone is a long way from his parents local fish and chip shop ‘Tikis Takeaway’. He’s travelled the world, worked with acclaimed chefs and built a soul food following wing by wing. The chef and owner of Belles Hot Chicken in Australia is popping up in Auckland for one month only to share with us a dish from his heart:

“What’s special about New Zealand cuisine for me is that it feels like home. Everything I taste here has a really epic food memory. My clash of cuisines dish is basically me. It’s soul food from Nashville Tennessee, Polynesian spirit and a beer from Barcelona. Fresh ingredients, locally sourced, and really amazing.”

Introducing Morgan McGlone’s Estrella Damm Beer-Battered Seafood

The stars of this dish are the Cloudy Bay Storm Clams and Cloudy Bay Tua Tua Clams, harvested just off the New Zealand coastline. These are complemented with local green-lip mussels from Auckland Fish Market.

What makes the seafood really sing is when it’s coated in perfectly seasoned beer batter. McGlone uses Estrella Damm beer because the light, crisp profile really highlights the natural seafood flavour. Deep fried to golden perfection, it’s served atop a Stormy Clam shell on a bed of three-hour slow braised native greens (think: mustard leaf, pouha, kale, spinach).  Garnished with fried parsley and McGlone’s own Belles Old Bay Salt—this is a dish you don’t want to miss.
