Some Friday nights you want to turn up the volume and hit up the city’s night clubs and parties, others you might just want to have some quiet quality time to pause, reset, and forget about the week of work, and that’s OK.
Auckland Art Gallery is offering free drop-in figure drawing sessions on Friday lates, guided by artist and drawing tutor Abbey Lyman. All materials are provided by Gordon Harris Art & Graphic Store and AUT. As the name suggests, you are free to come and go whenever you please. Simply bring yourself.
You don’t have to be an art enthusiast or even a good drawer to enjoy these stress-free sessions as they focus more on the process of observing and recording, than getting the perfect result.
The gallery takes on a different vibe as night falls. The lights are softer, the spaces more intimate, and the artworks are more personal when you almost have the whole exhibition to yourself. What better way to reset from a long week than a contemplative drawing session, followed by a stroll through the exhibitions and a bite of the tapas at the gallery’s cafe?
We find these quality nights surprisingly therapeutic. When you are given the time and space to take in every detail of the model, and transfer it onto lines on your paper, you walk away a little more aware and appreciative of all the small things going on in our lives. Anchoring and smoothing, it never fails to set up the right mindset for the upcoming weekend. Get amongst.
