Ah 2020, how do we even begin to describe it? While we all may not have many overseas passport stamps or holiday ‘grams to show for it, let’s be honest, we did watch a damn heap of Netflix this year. And now, Netflix is out and about with its usual end of year round up to breakdown the most-watched movies and shows of 2020.
And good news, the people turned to female-led stories, iconic characters and worlds, and a heavy dose of romance.

Holidate gave the world what it needed after an extremely tough year—a little escapism and some lo-fi comedy. The two make a pact to be each other’s “holidate” for every festive occasion throughout the next year.
American Murder: The Family Next Door
In 2018, 34-year-old Shanann Watts and her two young daughters went missing in Frederick, Colorado. As heartbreaking details emerged, their story made headlines worldwide. Told entirely through archival footage that includes social media posts, law enforcement recordings, text messages and never-before-seen home videos, director Jenny Popplewell pieces together a police investigation gone wrong and a disintegrating marriage. Watch American Murder: The Family Next Door here.
We mean, if watching Millie Bobby Brown star in anything other than Stranger Things is as close as we’re going to get in 2020 to being reunited with Eleven… we’re here for it. When Enola Holmes—Sherlock’s teen sister—discovers her mother missing, she sets off to find her, becoming a super-sleuth in her own right as she outwits her famous brother and unravels a dangerous conspiracy around a mysterious young Lord. Starring Millie Bobby Brown, Sam Claflin, with Henry Cavill and Helena Bonham-Carter. Watch Enola Holmes here.
Some things just make sense and Mark Wahlberg starring in yet another action-comedy is one of those things. The Sinner: Jamie
The third instalment (more appropriately known as The Sinner: Jamie) follows Detective Harry Ambrose (Bill Pullman) as he begins a routine investigation of a car accident in upstate New York. At the centre of the investigation is local teacher and all-around nice guy Jamie (Matt Bomer). But of course, this is The Sinner so nothing is as it seems, especially when Jamie’s old college pal Nick (Chris Messina) turns up and starts dredging up some disturbing secrets of the past.
The Haunting Of Bly Manor
After an au pair’s tragic death, Henry Wingrave (Henry Thomas) hires a young American nanny (Victoria Pedretti) to care for his orphaned niece and nephew who reside at Bly Manor with the estate’s chef Owen, groundskeeper Jamie and housekeeper. But, like all horror movies, all is not as it seems at the manor. Is it haunted? Is it stuck in a time warp? Or is it the people who enter the manor who create all the terror? Regardless, it’s one of the best shows you could watch on Netflix and you can watch it here.
The Queen's Gambit
Shock horror, The Queen's Gambit was the most-watched TV show on Netflix. There’s no point explaining the plot for this one because we know you’ve been a good sport and binged it two times over. However, third time’s a charm. Watch it (again) here.
Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness
It was the docuseries that saved us when cities were shut down and there was nothing to do but binge your way through Netflix. Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness exposed the bizarre world of Joe Exotic, a stranger-than-fiction cult personality in the world of big cat owners. He’s a mulleted, gun-toting polygamist and a country-western singer who presided over an Oklahoma roadside zoo but who is now serving out a 22-year prison sentence for attempting to hire a hitman along with a number of other violations of the Endangered Species Act. To say anything more would be a spoiler.
Emily In Paris
It’s simultaneously the best and worst TV show to watch on Netflix. Emily, an ambitious twenty-something marketing executive from Chicago, unexpectedly lands her dream job in Paris when her company acquires a French luxury marketing company — and she is tasked with revamping their social media strategy. Emily's new life in Paris is filled with intoxicating adventures and surprising challenges as she juggles winning over her work colleagues, making friends, and navigating new romances.
