Mt Eden, get excited because a new gastro pub has just moved into your hood. Taking over the Cardrona Ale House’s old digs, The Good Home is a welcome addition to our ever-growing food scene, and it’s sure to become a home away from home for many.
With over a decade of experience running Devonport’s much-loved Patriot, Scottish brothers Mark and Stevie Brogan have set up this laid-back establishment and will be serving up contemporary gastro pub fare all day, seven days a week.
From the hearty pies to classic burgs and fries (which are hand cut and double fried), everything is made fresh daily. And, with the menu boasting offerings such as beer-battered snapper or terakihi, rack of lamb and sticky BBQ pork ribs, we’re not surprised that it’s the food that Mark believes is the reason that keeps the regulars coming back.
With a great importance placed on family-friendly vibes, a kids’ area is off to one side, complete with giant scrabble and connect four games to keep the youngins’ occupied. But what might be the icing on the cake for those with fussy eaters is the kids’ menu. Your sprogs will be happy and well-fed in no time.
However, the adults aren’t forgotten and it’s fairly safe to say that the grand ten-metre-long bar is the cornerstone of the bar. With an extensive selection of premium and craft beers (12 on tap) and a lengthy wine list, The Good Home provides a fine selection that makes the pub the perfect place to wet your whistle. And for those wanting to enjoy a quiet drink away from it all, the snug whisky lounge provides an ideal spot for a tipple or two.
With the arrival of spring and summer in sight, the timing of this new opening couldn’t be more spot on. The newly extended outdoor area is drenched in sun and will work as the dreamy pozzy to soak it up. For good food in all the comforts of home, look no further than The Good Home—it’s going to be a pearler.
