Inner-city dwellers, workers and students, rejoice! We’ve hunted down your new favourite on-the-go eatery—Sumthin' Dumplin'. The new kid on the block opens its doors on O’Connell Street this Monday and boy oh boy are you in for a treat. As their name suggests, Sumthin' Dumplin' will be serving up a tasty array of handmade dumplings alongside flavour-packed loaded fries which you can then slurp down with a vegan-friendly shake.
This new venture is very much a family affair. Owners Shane Liu and his wife Berdina Stuart have had the lifelong dream of opening their own place. So, with a little help from Head Chef and so-called ‘Dumplin Mumma’ Lan Ni (who happens to be Shane’s Mum) and little brother Richard, you know this family is food-obsessed.
“We’re from Beijing originally” explains Shane. “And, I wanted to share my cherished childhood memories in the form of food.”
And we’re glad he did! The recipes have been in the family for some generations now. You can even spot Lan happily rolling and filling the generous dumplings from the street through a window. It adds an array of theatre and will surely entice hoards of punters off the streets.
The flavours are a mix of traditional and fusion. Berdina’s favourite is the beef and cheese—their take on the classic Kiwi mince and cheese pie. And, we might have to agree. Other concoctions include ‘The OG’—premium pork and cabbage, the ‘Great White’—shredded chicken breast with white and shitake mushrooms all encased in a wholemeal wrap. There’s succulent prawn and chive and, for the vegans, a delightful tofu, shitake and bok choy number. Word to the wise: make sure you douse your tasty morsels in their homemade chilli oil—it’s not to be missed.
The hole-in-the-wall styled eatery is set to keep those lunchtime cravings at bay and feed you well into the night, including late nights on both Fridays and Saturdays.
Hello! We’re looking forward to a few downtown tipples followed by a midnight revel—Sumthin' Dumplin', you really are something!
