Play House | How To Overhaul Your Bedroom So It's Basically Your Own Apartment

Let’s face it, Auckland’s housing market is tough. So the truth is we’re probably going to be stuck living with our flatmates (or parents) for a while yet.

But, never fear! Freedom has come to the rescue with the hot tips on how you can deck out your bedroom so it’s pretty much your own apartment.

Here’s everything you need to know!

Freedom 1

#1 Light It Up

You’ve probably been getting by with a ceiling light and bedside lamp, and while that’s totally functional, a few additional lights will go a long way to making your bedroom look next level. Add a few floor lamps or string lighting around your bedhead and you’ve already outdone your flatmates.

#2 Lush Bedding Is The Only Way

We sleep for around a third of our lifetime (if we’re lucky), so you want to make sure you’re catching those z’s in the most comfortable bedding ever. We are obsessed with pure linen. It’s breathable and gets softer and softer the more you wash it, plus it keeps you cool in summer and warm in winter. Opt for lighter colours if you want your space to appear bigger.

#3 Accessorise, Accessorise, Accessorise

Artwork, vases, candles, throw rugs and cushions, the more you accessorise the better. However, you’re going to want to be mindful of your space, if your room is on the smaller side definitely don’t overdo it.

#4 Think Outside The Box

When you think of bedrooms usually beds, bedside tables and chests of drawers come to mind, but you can think outside the box with the furniture you incorporate. For example, a buffet might be just the right thing to store your clothes or a side table might make for a cute, stylish bedside table. Get creative!

#5 If Room Permits, Get A Sofa

The key to making your room feel like an apartment is creating as many break out spaces as possible. So if you have room, add a small sofa or armchair. It’ll give you somewhere to escape your housemates without feeling like you’re living your life in bed, and you can even invite a friend over to hang without the potential awkwardness of you both sitting on your bed.

#6 Treat Yo'self To A Plush Bed

While it’s easy to put off getting a grown up bed until you move into your forever home, that might take a while, so why not treat yourself to a great bed now. Your sleep will benefit immensely and you can always take it to the new place when the time comes. We are obsessed with this navy palazzo bed (which is under a grand mind you), its gold feet and navy velvet make for the perfect contemporary look.

#7 Mirrors Add Visual Space

This one’s pretty obvious, but here’s another reminder in case you’re still getting by without one. Hang a mirror on your wall if you don’t have space for a floor mirror, there are no excuses!

#8 Don’t Cut A Rug

Rugs are more than just noise dampeners; they bring a room together! There are, however, a few commandments you need to follow when using rugs. Be sure to buy the right size, your rug should always overlap with furniture, the bigger the better really as this can make rooms look on the larger side. Also, don’t steer away from some rug layering action, so long as the colours and textures compliment each other.

#9 Get Your Green On

In case you’ve been living under a rock for the last three years, a good selection of indoor plants is everything in life (we’re not joking), you just have to check out everything that’s trending this year to see why. We are obsessed with marimo moss balls and polka dot begonias, but we’ll always have a soft spot for the old fiddle leaf fig and mother in law’s tongue. If you're a convicted plant murderer, it's no biggie, Freedom has a whole range of faux plants (that still look real) that you only have to dust every once and a while. Easy!

#10 Your Bed Is Not Your Desk

We’ve heard it all before, your bed should be for sleep and sex, so that definitely means study and work are no goes. Create a mini office in the corner of your room so you can get shit done without making bed a stressful place. If space is an issue, get crafty and incorporate a desk into your chest of drawers.

For all the inspiration you need, check out Freedom and you’ll have your own ‘apartment’ in no time.
