There’s no food more comforting than a crumpet. Soft and pillowy with a satisfying crunch, these bad boys make our hearts flutter in delight. If you thought the only way to eat a crumpet was a supermarket six-pack coated in butter, think again! While we’re still a sucker for this combo, some of Auckland’s finest eateries have given the humble crumpet a makeover. Here’s our round up of the best crumpets in Auckland.
Leading the pack with the crumpet craze is Kraken Crumpets. The pretty little food truck does a cracking good (or should we say ‘kraken good’?!) crumpet. You’ll be pulling your hair out as your try to choose between the likes of bacon and egg, salmon, basil pesto and banana salted caramel. We can’t go past their blueberry black forest crumpet. It’s generously topped with blueberry compote, dark chocolate coconut ganache, chocolate chips, pistachio and raspberry. It’s literally what dreams are made of.
Little & Friday
Ponsonby and Belmont
No one knows sweet treats better than Little & Friday so it’s only appropriate they have not one, not two but THREE crumpets on their menu. They also know you can’t go wrong with the age-old topping of butter. It’s not just your average butter though—think spiced ginger butter with orange marmalade, salted whipped butter with chunky honeycomb and roasted hazelnut butter with plum and raspberry jam. Gimme that buttery goodness.
If you like big crumpets (and you cannot lie), look no further than Orphans Kitchen. To call the crumpets large would be an understatement—these puppies are absolutely ginormous! They make the fluffy pillow of goodness from the ground up and serve them simply with burnt butter and lashings of honey. Excuse us while we re-ravel our tongues.
Scratch Bakers HQ
The friendly folk at Scratch Bakers HQ serve the breakfast classic in a grand fashion. Their handmade crumpets are dished up with whipped buffalo butter and lemon curd. Fluffy, fresh and fantastic, they single-handedly make Auckland a better place to live. On ya, Scratch!
Whether you’re in the mood for sweet or savoury, Chuffed have you covered on both fronts. The inner CBD café has two crumpet offerings: ginger poached pear and vanilla cream drizzled with maple syrup or chai-cured salmon with avo and salsa verde. Can’t decide between the two? Order ’em both (we won’t tell your personal trainer).
