Late last week, a trailer dropped for a new murder-mystery series called The Undoing, and there are at least a few early signs that this one’s going to be a cracker. You’ve got the creator of Big Little Lies on writing duties, our own Nicole Kidman front of screen alongside Hugh Grant—whose career is experiencing something similar to a McConaissance—and, it’s an HBO series.
It’s a combo that’s likely to yield incredible results, and the plot makes us think so, too. In the show, Kidman and Grant play wealthy couple Grace and Jonathan Fraser who live a fortunate lifestyle in the upper echelon of society. Like many good murder-mysteries, however, it takes just a short but substantial series of events for the privileged couple’s lifestyle to unravel entirely.
The just-released trailer only gives so much away, though what’s confirmed is a violent murder and a sort-of public disaster that forces character Grace Fraser to rebuild her life from the ground up.
As with many HBO series, The Undoing comes in at a restrained six episodes, avoiding any fluff or filler episodes, with each hour(ish) long instalment being just as integral to the story as the other. As the title suggests, you can expect this thriller to unravel ep by ep until it reaches that I-knew-it moment in the climax.
The Undoing hits SoHo and sister-streaming site, Neon, weekly from Monday 26 October.
