When it comes to health drinks, black is, err, the new black. Move over, kombucha. See ya later, matcha. There’s a new kid in town by the name of activated charcoal.
“Pardon me?” we hear you ask. Well it turns out this black goodness is a powerful detoxifier. The charcoal acts like a sponge to soak up toxins from the intestinal tract. Word on the street is that it helps your digestive system out—easing bloating and gassiness as well as maintaining healthy bowel function. It’s also apparently ace at preventing a hangover.
If you wish to get on the black bandwagon, here are three places to get activated charcoal in Auckland.
Note: Drink with caution, folks. Activated charcoal may reduce or prevent the absorption of prescription medicine. If in doubt, talk to your doctor.
At this Herne Bay fave, you’ve got all the health drinks: organic cold-press juice, matcha mattes, superfood smoothies and an activated charcoal smoothie. The jet black drink stars a delightful combo of pineapple, cucumber, ginger, lime, mint, coconut water and—of course—activated charcoal. Because charcoal doesn’t actually have a ‘taste’, you’ll find your mouth filled with the fruity, refreshing flavours of the smoothie.
Also serving up the black stuff is Kingland’s Greenleaf Organics. Their 250ml or 500ml ‘space’ drink stars three key ingredients: activated charcoal, water and organic lemon. The idea behind this drink is to use it alongside a detox. Grab a bottle when you sign up to one of the café’s one or two-day juice cleanse packages. It’s a goodwun to sip when you’re feeling bloated.

You’ll also find bottles of charcoal goodness at Little Bird. Their bottled drink range (aka The Squeezery) has a pitch-black number called charcoal tonic. It features activated charcoal as well as lemon, maple and water—giving it a palatable zesty zing. It’s a lifesaver (or should we say gut-saver?) after a big night out. Laterz, hangover! The drink also comes in a range of Little Bird’s one to five-day cleanses.
