What The Heck Should You Wear To NZFW?

Yep, we feel ya, it’s pretty stressful to find not just one outfit, but multiple outfits to wear to one of the most coveted events of the year—New Zealand Fashion Week. While some of us have been waiting in anticipation for this all year, others are not so excited, mainly because the idea of finding just what to wear is too daunting.

If you’re not one of the lucky ones to have unlimited options and the ability to borrow from designer’s new season samples, then listen up: here are our top ten tips for what to wear to NZFW.

1. Leather Jacket

A good leather jacket can really do no wrong. Always have it in the back of your car for emergencies.

2. Black Skinnies

If you want to play it safe, keep a pair of black skinny jeans with you. They’re guaranteed to go with anything.

3. An IT Bag

People will notice everything you are wearing, and if you’re going to be sitting in the front row your bag will be on display—ensure you’ve got a designer one.

4. Black Pumps

While fashion week is definitely about pushing the boundaries, it’s also important to have a couple of failsafe styles on hand in case of emergency—and classic black pumps are exactly that.

5. Something From The Designer

It’s a way of showing respect to the designer if you wear something of theirs to the show. Normally last season is a no-go zone, but if it’s for support, it’s totally ok. Just call it ‘vintage’.

6. Accessorise

Accessorising is key, because we know you won’t have enough different outfits for all of the shows—three shows per day and seven days in the week…we don’t even want to do the math. Having a range of accessories to mix and match will help to change up your look.

7. Study Up On International Street Style

Lucky for us, international fashion weeks are ahead of us, so we get to look towards them for inspiration. Study up on the most coveted street style from international fashion weeks and take some style cues from them.

8. Have A Few Key Pieces

Select a few key pieces from your wardrobe, or seasonal favourites and plan your outfits around these. Spend some time in your room mixing and matching up outfits and exploring new ways to wear these key items.

9. Don’t Forget Sunglasses

Come day three of fashion week and you’ll definitely be a bit worse for wear. Everyone knows that while the shows are what we come for, the after-parties are where the fun begins. Hide the bags under your eyes from the boss and street-style photographers with a big pair of sunglasses.

10. Wear It With Confidence

At the end of the day, fashion week is for pushing boundaries and having fun with your style. Whatever you decide to wear, wear it with confidence. It doesn’t matter if not everyone likes your look, what matters most is if you like it.
