Shoku Iku

Located on High Street in Northcote, Shoku Iku is an organic, raw vegan cafe that specialises in superfood smoothies, healing elixirs, freshly-made salads and raw desserts. Run by Japanese chef and blogger Yoko Inoue, Shoku Iku's menu is based on the macrobiotic philosophy and raw food diet, changing daily depending on what's in season and what Inoue feels like 'cooking'. While they're open for lunch Wednesday to Sunday, make sure you attend one of their Saturday dinners for a nourishing feed.

A local hero on Ripponlea's Glen Eira Road, Bala Da Dhaba is one of Melbourne's best Indian restaurants. Jumping around the rich regions of said country, as well as incorporating a Nepalese kitchen influence, Bala Da Dhaba whip up some of the best curries in town. Bringing some much-needed life to Docklands with a stiff caffeine shot in the arm, Long Shot on Collins Square is a gorgeous haven. With its chess board floor, tiled and padded walls and wooden plantation shuttered bench seats, it's as cute as pie and the homemade fare is magnificent too, including sodas in glass milk bottles, with beans provided by St Ali and cakes by the talented Maria Lantelme.

Maedaya Sake & Grill

Sake is all the rage in Melbourne these days and one of the best spots with the biggest collections is Maedaya Sake & Grill on Bridge road, Richmond. With a dizzying collection, have no fear, owner Toshi Maeda is all about spreading the sake knowledge/love and the guys will guide you through tastings with matched nibbles too, or head upstairs for the full menu. A pleasingly dark space with ropes stretched out in force on the walls, it's pretty styley too.

Bentleigh's Merchant's Guild cafe on Centre Road dishes up some hearty feeds including doughnut French toast with vanilla mascarpone, peaches and pistachios, and Pumpkin, feta and harrisa polenta biscuit with eggs and za'atar. Showcasing a revolving turntable of coffee from some of the city's best roasters, there's a big list of exotic teas on offer too, including Jasmine Pearls and Golden Monkey, and you can also have cold pressed prana chai over ice (arguably the best chai in Melbourne).

Ike's Rack Shack, out the back of The Beaufort on Rathdowne Street in Carlton, is your go-to for ribs and burgers, with a side of traditional cocktails and desserts. Get pork, beef or lamb ribs, or try the Vegan style ribs (really) before hoeing into apple pie. Don't wear white; Ike's Rack Shack doesn't do things clean. Ribs and bibs is the name of the game.

This Albert Park institution, run by Jock Main, is frequented in both warmer and cooler seasons, providing the perfect treat for a summer's day, or something to finish off a winter meal. Chocolate and Hokey Pokey are the fast favourites, but the strange and experimental are always a hit. Jock's Ice cream is located just up from Albert Park beach, and is a sublime end to your day.

From the crew behind The Black Toro in Glen Waverley, Sezar is a contemporary Armenian restaurant tucked down Melbourne Place in the CBD. Inspired by traditional Armenian flavours, along with the influences of neighbouring countries, Sezar dishes up mouth-watering share plates and charcoal meats, along with flavoursome sides, sweet treats, and a very well-stocked drinks list that can all be enjoyed over two levels of dining. Located on Glen Waverley's bustling Kingsway strip, The Black Toro is a restaurant that takes a fresh approach to Hispanic cuisine. Opened in 2012, their seasonal menu features 'poco plates' perfect for nibbling, 'grande plates' for those after a heartier feed and a dessert menu that'll please the sweetest of tooths (hello deconstructed peanut butter cheesecake). All this, plus a killer cocktail list that mixes the classics with Latin American flavours. Can anyone say 'arrrrriba!'?

There's nothing illegal about Speakeasy Kitchen Bar on Chapel Street in South Yarra, but the cobbled back alley entrance from Commercial Road to the courtyard bar may indicate otherwise. The Chapel Street frontage is a welcoming admission to a light and airy space for eating and drinking the day (and night) away. The sizable terrace out the back reinforces the secretive prohibition era theme and the impressive cocktail accompanies an all-day menu which means you have every reason to stay for the long haul. Now option fro breakfast too!
