Broccoli equals good and doughnuts equal bad. Right? That statement couldn’t be further from the truth, according to a health trend that’s currently taking the world by storm.

Intuitive eating has been around for yonks but, thanks to the rise of Instagram, we’re hearing a lot more about it now as Insta-dietitians and online fitness personalities shake things up. And having tried it ourselves, we’re big fans, here’s why.

The thing we love most about intuitive eating is that first and foremost it requires you to forget weight-loss diets. How many of us have struggled to stick to a new diet or experienced success while on the diet, only to pack the weight back on once you come off it? We know we’re guilty of this.

Guilt and shame are actually some of the food-linked emotions that intuitive eating helps to put to pasture. You basically have to learn to trust your inner cues around what and how much food your body needs at any given time.

And it’s not a diet, it’s a mindset and a way of life. It’s about being more mindful with what’s on your plate and listening to what your body is telling you, which of course changes day-to-day depending on what we’re up to. One day you might crave salads and the next it might be a cinnamon bun.

According to The Original Intuitive Eating Pros, you need to “give yourself unconditional permission to eat.” There are no good or bad foods, just foods that satisfy you. But it’s important to remember to look out for ways in which you use food, other than to satisfy your body’s needs; for example, you might use it to quell anxiety, boredom or loneliness. And that’s not to say you shouldn’t honour those feelings too, sometimes you really do need to hoe into some ice cream to help you feel better, but it’s about noticing when you become satisfied and stopping there, without feeling an ounce of self-loathing.

It’s not about being perfect or having to look a certain way—in actuality, diving into intuitive eating is more a journey in self-love.

And while that might sound naff to you, we can get on board with anything that means you don’t have to count calories… because, how boring.

Have you heard about forest bathing? Apparently we should all be doing it.
