More Than Dumplings | Top 10 Places To Eat On Dominion Road

Dominion Road is—hands down—the best street in Auckland. Because, how many streets have an entire song dedicated to them?! Dominion Road does. Musical fame aside, what makes this road really REALLY awesome is its mouth-watering, finger-licking eats.

You don’t need to fork out an around-the-world ticket to experience the world’s best cuisine. Nope, all you need is a bus ticket to Dom Road! From New York-style pizza and fine dining to late-night bubble tea and dumplings, dumplings and more dumplings, Dominion Road has it all.

As a tribute to the city’s world’s best road, we’ve rounded up the best places to eat on Dominion Road.

Please note: This list is ordered by street number. Ranking these incredible eateries would be impossible. Like actual.

1. Eden Noodles Cafe

105 Dominion Road

If you like your food spicy, look no further than Eden Noodles Café! Their noodles and dumplings come in three flavours: hot, hotter and hottest. Pro tip: make a takeaway phone order ahead of visiting because there’s always a mammoth queue outside. Double pro tip: wash down with milk to ease the burn.

2. Barilla Dumpling

305 and 571 Dominion Road

Successfully devouring a 20-piece serve of Barilla Dumpling’s moreish dumplings is an Aucklanders rite of passage. The much-loved dumpling joint is an Auckland institution—so much so that their popularity led them to opening a second site (also on Dominion Road) last year. Come for the dumplings, stay for the fried green beans.

3. Gorgeous Pizza

327 Dominion Road

Is it New York or is it Dominion Road? You could be fooled into thinking you’re in the Big Apple at quaint pizzeria. Handcrafted with love, the doughy, cheesy delights from Gorgeous Pizza are totally, err, gorgeous. The pizzas are named after women—models, actresses and even a few of the owner’s ex-girlfriends!

4. A’meza

345 Dominion Road

New kid on the block, A’meza, is shaking up Dominion Road’s food scene for all the right reasons. Specialising in pan-Asian eats, you’ll find everything from prawn beignet to oxtail cannelloni—with an extensive wine and cocktail list to wash it all down! Leave room for dessert because the sago pudding with green tea and rhubarb is not to be missed.

5. Meredith’s

365 Dominion Road

Dining at Meredith’s is an experience every Aucklander needs to have. With Michael Meredith at the helm of this fine dining restaurant, you know you’re in safe hands. The team take humble ingredients, transforming them into works of delicious works of art. Book your next date night here asap.

6. New Flavour

537 Dominion Road

You can’t call yourself an Aucklander until you’ve had a good ol’ fashioned BYO at New Flavour. The expression ‘the more, the merrier’ rings true at this much-loved eatery—more people, more dumplings and more wine. Open until the wee small hours, you devour dumplings all. Night. Long.

7. Spicy House

557 Dominion Road

The ever-busy Spicy House serves up some of the best damplings (yes, they’re called ‘damplings’ on the menu) in town! Boasting mismatched furniture, questionable customer service and cheap eats, the tiny but mighty eatery is Dominion Road at its finest. The hot and spicy chicken is not to be missed.

8. Hulucat Tea House

603 Dominion Road

Wash those dumplings down with a bubble tea from Hulucat Tea House. They serve fruit and milk-based teas that are customised with your choice of ‘bubbles’. While we can’t go past their delightfully chewy tapioca pearls, they also have the likes of honey aloe, jelly and sea salt cream. Half the fun is trying to suck up every last pearl!

9. Shaolin Kung Fu Noodle

626 Dominion Road

Shaolin Kung Fu Noodle is known and loved for its handmade noodles and cartoon-covered tabletops. At this quirky eatery you’ll find yourself slurping down noodles with the likes of Hello Kitty, The Powerpuff Girls and Elmo—cute! Their fried Xinjing lamb noodles are our go-to, while spice lovers should devour a bowl of their hot and spicy beef noodles.

10. Xi’An Food Bar

650 Dominion Road

You haven’t lived until you’ve tried a Chinese burger and Xi’an Food Bar is the place to do it. The braised beef and cumin-spiced lamb are Urban List faves (we suggest you order one of each). The melt-in-your-mouth meat is slow-cooked before being stuffed in a house-made flatbread.
