Here are the best things to do in Christchurch this June.
31 May - 6 July 2019
There’s really nothing better than an evening out at the ballet, especially as the temperature drops. This month, we’re excited to step into the shadows at Isaac Theatre Royal with Royal New Zealand Ballet’s Black Swan, White Swan. A story of love, seduction, betrayal and redemption, we’re here for this captivating take on the classic love story. Hailed as the Swan Lake of our time, you definitely want to book tickets for this stylish and provocative ballet.
Dux’s Mulled Wine Festival
Dux Central's annual Mulled Festival is back again this year and it’s set to be one boozy day out. With a spin on the old classics, plenty of special house recipes for your tasting pleasure, plus delicious food and live music, you don’t want to miss this. Grab your pals for one of the best winter warmers of the season.
Addington Raceway Hosts the IRT Harness Jewels
One of the most exclusive events on the racing calendar, the IRT Harness Jewels is the perfect excuse to get dressed to the nines and have a big day out with your best pals. Soak up the atmosphere (and uninterrupted views) in the Silk and Satin lounge, one of Addington Raceway’s largest lounges which also includes a three-course lunch and coffee and tea made fresh throughout the day. The Spectators Punters Lounge is ideal for racing enthusiasts who want a relaxed place to mix and mingle.
The Foundry Finale Ft. Savage
After seven long years, it’s time to say goodbye to The Foundry as we know it… And what better way to see the building out than to bring back the man who literally broke it in, Savage. In lieu of his final payment for the busted floor, Savage will be taking the stage and helping us bid farewell to our favourite uni bar.
Roots x Gin Gin
Foodies ahoy. From the shores of Lyttleton to the streets of Christchurch, Roots is putting on a fine display of food at gin gin on Sunday 2 June. Jackson Mehlhopt & Will Houia have put together a small menu that will offer the flavours of their personalities and local produce. Come along for a day and evening of delicious food with optional gin and wine pairings to match.
ASB Christchurch Marathon
In this country, we’re pretty lucky to be spoilt with gorgeous views from almost any vantage point. One way to take in these views while releasing endorphins and challenging yourself is at the Christchurch Marathon. This flat, fast course is in its 39th year and undoubtedly one of the best ways to see our newly regenerated city. Starting at the iconic town hall, the course takes you along the Avon River and through Hagley Park. Whether you’re interested in taking on the full or half marathon, the ASB Christchurch Marathon should be on your list this month.
Studio Italia Italian Film Festival
11 - 20 June
From Cannes-awarded auteur dramas to star-studded hit comedies, the Italian film festival is the perfect time to discover the best Italian films from the last 12 months. Grab a Prosecco, Peroni or San Pellegrino and enjoy Italian cinema at its finest. Held at Academy Gold Cinema in Sydenham, it’s a wonderful way to switch up your movie-watching experience. Viva il Cinema!
48-Hour Film Festival
14 -16 June
Speaking of film, there’s nothing quite like New Zealand’s largest guerilla filmmaking competition. Simply put, filmmakers have just one weekend (48Hours) to make a short film and don’t know what genre they’ll be shooting until the start of the competition. All creativity: writing, shooting, editing and adding a musical soundtrack, must occur within the 48Hour window beginning Friday evening at 7pm and ending Sunday at 7pm. To add to the mayhem, they must also include some random elements. Are you up for the challenge?
CoCA Fundraising Gala 2019
CoCA’s vast Mair gallery will set the stage for an arts and gastronomy experience that will transport you to another sphere. Enter a brave new world through the vision of artisan designer, Steven Junil Park of 6x4, in collaboration with Two Productions, Spectrum Audio Visual, live performances from a galaxy of local artists and the epicurean genius of White Tie Catering. The dress code for this night of elemental experiences: ethereal black tie. Booking is now open and seats are strictly limited. Come and join us in the wonder.
Winter Wine Fest At Vesuvio
Vesuvio’s cosy courtyard is the perfect place to be year-round, but it’s extra special during the winter months. Their annual wine fest is always a highlight and this year, there will be music from Conor Hartley Hall and Yurt Party alongside mulled wine and hot buttered rum—yum. Oh, and there’s also snow to look out for.
Christchurch Art Show
20 - 23 June
If you’re an art lover, then you won’t want to miss Christchurch’s annual art show, which returns for its sixth year this June. Explore the work of hundreds of artists and thousands of artworks with opening night kicking off on Thursday, 20 June. Here you’ll find work by multimedia artist, Joel Hart and dreamy, meditative paintings by Kris Ancog. There’s so much to see and Christchurch Art Show is the perfect place to immerse yourself in all things art.
Nick Offerman - All Rise
Get ready for some light chuckling and upright howling. For one night only, award-winning US actor, writer and comedian Nick Offerman will grace us with his presence at Isaac Theatre Royal. His brand-new live show, All Rise is an evening of deliberative talking and light dance that will compel you to chuckle whilst enjoining you to brandish a better side of humanity than the one to which we have grown accustomed.
