12 Last Minute Valentine’s Day Ideas When You Don’t Feel Like Dinner

By Anna Cox
10th Feb 2022

Before you book that same restaurant for this year’s Valentine’s Day dinner, stop. Step away from the keypad. What if we told you there’s more to Valentine’s Day than eating out? What if we told you there are all sorts of cool events across our lovely city that don’t include shovelling pasta in your mouth by candlelight?

If you’re sick of bubbles and restaurants and chocolate, then read on. ‘Cause here are 12 date night ideas to do around Perth this Valentine’s Day that aren't dinner and drinks. In the immortal words of Drake: thank me later.

Snuggle Up At The Moonlight Cinemas

Moonlight Cinema, hosted on the lawns of our iconic Kings Park, has a stellar lineup of romantic flicks running between the 8 and15 February, including The Notebook, Liquorice Pizza and Cyrano. Grab a picnic blanket and watch a movie with your pals or a cute date in this magical outdoor setting. Don’t forget the “share” sized packet of Maltesers and a can of Aeroguard. At Least the mosquitos want us single gals on Valentine’s day.

Channel Your Inner Picasso With Wine

If you don't know and love Frida’s by now, Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to try it out. A premium paint and sip spot on High St in Freo, Frida’s is the place to get artistic (and a little tipsy) with your love. Book a spot at the Valentine’s Day Special, Come Away With Me for just $66 per person and you’ll score all the art stuff you need, a qualified artist as your instructor and a banging playlist. You’re welcome to BYO your own bevs and nibbles but for an extra $35 you can grab a platter from Breaks Cafe that gets delivered to your table.

Get Steamy At Bodyscape With A Couples Sauna And Massage

You and your boo can relax from top to toe with Bodyscapes 60 minute full body massage, done by their trained massage therapists with their signature oil blend. As if this wasn’t steamy enough, you are then sent in for an hour-long infrared sauna to help detoxify, rejuvenate and kick your feet up after a long day of being pampered. The sauna can also help reduce inflammation and speed up muscle recovery from any “sports-induced” injuries you may have acquired.

If you’re keeping things friendly this Valentine’s Day, Bodyscape also offers their private yoga and sauna for two package. Whether you feel too vulnerable in a big class, or want to laugh at your friend doing downward dog, it's a great way to distract from the fact you're both single. If that didn’t sell it, the package also comes with an infrared sauna to relax and debrief.

Go Commando (Sort Of?) At Perth's Best Escape Rooms

If you thought building Ikea furniture was the ultimate relationship test, we’re here to prove you wrong. Escape This in Northbridge has just introduced their Pirate Island room, and if you ask us there is nothing more romantic than being surrounded by darkness, fog, and of course, skulls and crossbones. Alternatively, you could say “I love you” with a high stakes attempt at Escape Hunt in Fremantle, we recommend the Spy Mission room for that sexy Ocean's 11 vibe (George Clooney and Brad Pitt not included).

Go Mile High At Flight Club

The number one rule of Flight Club is to talk about how you had your first ever decent Valentine’s date here. Because honestly, is there anything more romantic than challenging your hand-eye coordination? Book in for a game at Flight Club this Valentine’s Day for you and your special someone and quote “Val Day” for a free trophy cocktail to share while you throw around cheesy pickup lines (and maybe some darts) with whatever lucky duck you choose to take along.

Get Physical At Maniax

Break the ice or the monotony of your usual date night with a relaxing and romantic session of axe throwing. Maniax in Northbridge is offering their Valentine special from the 11 until the 18 February, where you can throw hatchets for two hours and be treated to a drink on the hours (post throw, duh). Located in Northbridge, why not mosey on down to dinner and drinks after? Find some of the best eats within walking distance here.

Glow Big Or Glow Home at Mini Golf

As much as we love a dimly lit bar and romantic dinner date on Valentine's day, we just can't pass up the opportunity to be both a human glow stick AND Tiger Woods this Feb 14. Five minutes south of Fremantle you’ll find Glowing Rooms, where you can do glow-in-the-dark mini-golf or VR escape rooms. With floors and walls painted by specialised artists and some magic glasses, you’ll soon be putting your way through some amazing glow-in-the-dark landscapes.

Stroll Through Perth’s Galleries

Whether you're into art or not, there’s something pretty romantic about strolling through gallery exhibitions and soaking up the cultural sights with someone. Plus, they also provide plenty of great conversation starters along the way—yay for avoiding those nervous awkward silences. The Art Gallery of WA has just been jazzed up with new art and has a brand new rooftop bar with epic views over the city. There’s also the nearby Perth Institute of Contemporary Art, which can also be paired with a glass of wine and an epic grazing board at Picabar

Get Jazzy With It

If you enjoy the smooth, romantic tones of the Saxophone (or should we say Sexyphone?): This valentines day, go straight to The Ellington. Park up with vino and then dance your absolute heart out to the most intimate, lively jazz you’ll experience in Perth. If you’re continuing the night, why not head to The Bird or Pica Bar? Both are open until the early hours and the perfect place to do that cringey slow-dance your parents used to do after a few wines.

Soak Up Some Sun With A Picnic Basket

I think everyone who’s ever been on a picnic has said “we should do this more often” so why not do it this Valentine’s Day?! Plus, with the ease of the pre-assembled picnic pack from the lifesavers at People’s Cafeteria and North Street Store, you have no excuses. You really can’t go wrong at these stunning spots. Otherwise just pick a spot that is sentimental for you and your boo thang, or walking distance from home if you plan on sharing a few bevvies together.

Ghost Him (The Movie, That Is)

We can write off a The-Notebook-Style kiss in the rain because it's summer here in Australia, and we can also write off a Dirty-Dancing-Esque lift because we aren’t dating Patrick Swayze. We WILL NOT write off a Ghost-Style sensual pottery venture though. You can explore your options for pottery classes here. Even if you can’t manage a booking for Valentine’s Day, we encourage you to have a crack (pun intended!) regardless, even if it's with your besties. If you’re feeling confident, you could also go right ahead and hire your own pottery wheel from Art Base and have a crack at home.

Indulge In A Boujee Staycay

As much as we want to be cruising down the Amalfi coast with our lover in an open-top car, the closest we can get to this is by becoming a tourist in our own city. Why not treat yourself and your better (or lesser?) half to a staycay in some of Perth’s best hotels. From boutique beauties such as Quay Perth, the unmatched heritage charm, and sophistication of the COMO The Treasury or the uber-trendy Alex Hotel, there’s no denying Perth has an irresistible selection on offer.
