Turning their soda factory into a cocktail bar was a no-brainer for Michael Chiem and Thor Bergquist – the brains behind PS40, which is a small bar hidden behind King Street, on Skittle Lane. The menu features their four signature sodas all made in house – Wattle Cola, Blackstrap Ginger, Smoked Lemonade and Bush Tonic served straight up, or in one of ten cocktails.

Blaq Piq

Hidden away in a quiet corner of the CBD, Blaq Piq is a Japanese/Nordic-inspired café serving matcha lattes and Five Senses coffee alongside their curated menu of breakfast and lunch offerings. Breakfast will see you ordering the hulk smash; scallop bene with sauteed spinach, two poached eggs and fresh truffle on a milk bun. For lunch, a cheesy beef rendang is the only thing that’ll do and for dessert, it has to be the matcha bruleé with marinated strawberries.

These guys are all about balance. The atmosphere in this Chatswood gem is fun, bright and fresh. Its large open plan dining area it’s perfect for group hangs, and their outdoor wooden bench style tables just the place to spend those balmy summer nights. We have our eye on the mabo tofu as well as the spicy chicken karaage. In cases like this is best to just get both.

Sushi club? We’ll join! This Pyrmont restaurant boasts delectable sushi, bento boxes and noodles in a casual Japanese eatery setting with traditional décor and an outdoor seating area. So far these guys are ticking all of our boxes. They’ve got some seriously epic sushi and sashimi platters, and their ginger pork is absolutely mouthwatering. With an abundance of palate pleasing food, fun vibes and reasonable prices you’ll be a VIP member of this club in no time.

North Sydney knows good Japanese, and Rengaya is no exception. This cosy eatery offers a DIY barbeque option specializing in Wagyu beef cuts and seafood, and they’re all damn delicious. With plenty of options on the menu you’re spoilt for choice at this Japanese restaurant. Eat in, takeaway or choose the buffet. Yep, they’ve officially stolen our hearts. We are absolute suckers for a good ole’ buffet.

Gin & It is the newest pop-up bar to grace Wulugul Walk in Barangaroo specialising in (you guessed it) gin. Set inside a shipping container, owners Mikey Enright and Petr Dvoracek (of The Barber Shop) have created a bar especially for gin lovers. The main event is the often-forgotten cocktail Gin & It, which is a sweeter take on a martini and with a 180-strong selection of gins behind the bar, we won’t blame you for ordering multiple cocktails (or getting overwhelmed by the extensive selection).

It’s all about the community at Kabuki Shoroku. This family owned restaurant takes pride in their customer service, deliver some of the best in the business. The interior is adorned with classic Japanese décor, and the best part, they have booth seating— who doesn’t love a booth? Natasha Pillion, owner of The Brunch Lady, opened up shop after realising that Sydney was in dire need of a healthy take-away shop. We know being healthy can be extremely costly, however The Brunch Lady makes this easier for us with nothing over $15.

This pleasant little shop is owned by Sean McManus, whom some of you may know from Single Origin Roasters or Artificer in Surry Hills. He has also won many awards for his coffee making abilities, which pretty much gives him god-like qualities in the coffee world.
