Brisbane’s Best ‘80s Bakeries

Think neenish tarts, fluoro coloured meringues, faux cream, Pauls flavoured milk, tradie with a meat pie in tow and those glorious plastic curtains draped over the doorway. Picked it? Yes, we're talking about the ever-salubrious 80s bakery.

In the spirit of finding Brisbane's best, The Urban List team hosted an 80s bakery bash last Thursday morning. Sourcing our favourite baked goods from our childhood (for me, this meant the whole six weeks I lived in the 80s. And I'm pretty sure I wasn't munching down a piece of hedgehog slice at four weeks old), we plated up a selection of lamingtons, jam and cream buns, butterfly cakes, custard tarts, vanilla slice, chocolate éclairs and apple turnovers amongst many other packed-with-preservatives goodies. All bettered with an 80s mix tape to get us in the mood.

Repping Merthyr Village, Yeronga and Oxford Street Bakeries, these are the treats we would consider going back for.

Yeronga Bakery Cafe | Yeronga
The jam and cream buns from this 80s haunt go down a treat. The sweet doughy bun filled with cool whip and jam and dusted with icing is definitely a crowd pleaser. I also have to make note of the custard tart. We were quite impressed by the custards ability to hold its form. You could quite literally turn it upside and its shape wouldn't falter. It received a well-deserved 8/10 for structural integrity.

Village Cake Shop | New Farm
It seems that the Village Cake Shop have mastered long-time French favourite, the chocolate éclair. Cut in half, piped with cream and coated in rich chocolate, they're hard to pass up. If you're a bit of an apple pie or turnover fiend, you will be pleasantly surprised by their fresh pastry and sweet "appley" goodness.

Oxford Street Bakery | Bulimba
The butterfly cakes from the Southside favourite are a definite winner. While you'd think that we'd be excited at the prospect of a real cream-filled centre, we were a tad disappointed. It seems its faux counterpart seems to take the cake. Delicately dressed with sponge wings and icing sugar, they are a delight to look at prior to inhaling.

A tip for those seeking out this fabulous bakery fare, there was no EFTPOS in the 80s. It's cash only!
