Idle

Though you may have shed a tear or two when cult-favourite Agnes Bakery recently closed its doors, there’s no doubt the arrival of Idle—a bakery, market, and neighbourhood kitchen was the rebound you needed. The latest venture from Anyday Group (Agnes, sAme sAme, Hôntô, Biànca), Idle is the bridge between house-baked breads, pastries, and generous brunch dishes (say it with us: sourdough crumpets). And if the food wasn’t enough of a feast for your eyes, the fitout sure will be. Premiering as one of three new group venue openings slated for 2025—and the first in collaboration with internationally recognised interior designer Tamsin Johnson— Idle is a real looker.
Beurre Pastries
33 Park Road, Milton
There’s something about pastries being served up in industrial, sophisticated venues that makes them hit just that little bit more. This is exactly what awaits you at Beurre Pastries— a minimalist space featuring a selection of culinary masterpieces. The menu is broken up into four sections including core items, seasonal treats, monthly specials, and a small range of local-only items only a lucky few can snatch up. Churning out innovative and interesting flavours presented in dramatic and bold ways, Beurre’s creations are almost too pretty to eat.
Baker D. Chirico

With a name in the game like Baker Di Chirico, you’re in for a good feed. Arrayed on the counter of the expansive bakery and cafe you’ll find a range of French, German, and Italian-inspired goodies— from the essential croissants, danishes, and tarts, to bombolone, brioche rolls, sourdough loaves, and so much more. You can pair your chosen selection (because there’s no way you’ll be able to choose just one item) with a coffee to-go or find a table to sit and gobble your treats.
Christian Jacques
8 Baildon Street, Kangaroo Point
French-style pastries are the name of the game at Christian Jacques— a tiny, authentic French bakery under the Story Bridge at Kangaroo Point—so prepare to fall deep into a croissant-induced coma. But that’s not all you’ll find on offer—alongside these flakey and buttery goods, there’s also a range of sweet treats and breads to get your hands on. Using only ingredients imported from France, Parisian baker and owner Christian Jacques bakes everything daily—and they don’t last long.
Darvella Patisserie
1/37 Oxford Street, Bulimba
Right down at the river end of Bulimba’s Oxford Street, Darvella is a grab-and-go spot for your morning carb-loading session. Though there are a handful of stools by the entrance, the service is quick—and so is your food intake— which is probably best considering the amount of crumbs you’ll soon have down your shirt. There’s flaky, golden croissants, sugary doughnuts filled with jam or Nutella, decadent choc salted caramel and passionfruit meringue tarts, mille feuille, danishes, and more, not to mention savoury goodies like wraps, croissant sandwiches, sausage rolls, and loaves of fresh sourdough.

Let’s hear it for the Italians, who’ve seriously come through for us over the years. From gelato to pizza, pasta, and the Aperol Spritz, we have our beloved Italian expats to thank for a significant portion of our weekly diet. Adding to that list is Woolloongabba bakery, Cerin Pasticceria. Founders Matteo and Giuseppe blend their expertise and love for Italian baked goods to offer Brisbane a slice (or three) of authentic Italy. Expect focaccia mortadella with pistachio and stracciatella, vanilla bomboloni, and near-to-perfection cannolis alongside some of the best coffee you’re sure to have in your life.
Brooki Bakehouse

Cookie monsters, you’ve found your leader. Brooki Bakehouse dishes up decadent cookies, bespoke cakes, cupcakes, and other sweet treats and pastries like you’ve never seen before. While they're known for their sweet treats, their savoury options are just as impressive. Try the 12-hour slow-cooked BBQ pulled pork and caramelized onion croissant or the Reuben croissant packed with layers of pastrami, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, Dijon mustard, seeded mustard, and cornichons, all wrapped in buttery, flaky croissant dough. Adored for its tempting array of artisan breads, pastries, and macarons, Banneton has north and south siders lining up round the corner. Banneton’s bakers have well and truly mastered the art of wood fired baking, and use natural ingredients and traditional methods to produce their enticing loaves. If it’s a sweet treat you’re after, look no further than the tarte au citron, which has a very silky lemon curd with just the right amount of tanginess.

From the team behind NYC Bagel Deli comes Superthing—a bright and bubbly space serving up sweet treats galore. Baked in store from local, organic ingredients (and available wholesale too), flaky croissants are the specialty here, but you’ll also find decadent cookies, pastries, and sweets, as well as perfectly golden loaves of fresh sourdough.

This humble village bakehouse can command a crowd, and for good reason. From slow fermented loaves of sourdough to house-made pork, apple, and sage sausage rolls with tomato chilli jam, everything that comes out of a Gathered Bakers oven is cooked to perfection, so get yourself one of everything.
Riser Bread

Once you try what’s on offer at Riser Bread, there’s no going back. Located within a small cottage in Toowong, the airy bakery features plentiful seating—rare for a baked goods spot—where you can sip on a coffee as you crunch your way through sweet and savoury goodies like asparagus danishes, roasted capsicum and feta bear claws, and almond croissants.
The Whisk Fine Patisserie

If you want to know just how creative you can get with flaky croissant dough, head to The Whisk, where you’ll find eight different croissants on the menu. Danny’s Bread

Bread lovers will find their fellow people at Danny's Bread—an artisan sourdough bakery that specialises in baked goods and crunchy carbs. From sourdough loaves to fluffy focaccia, Danny’s delivers bread baked fresh daily alongside a selection of toasties, sweet treats, and pastries. Word to the wise: arrive early to beat the carb-loving crowd.
Cordelia Sourdough Bakehouse
47 Cordelia Street, South Brisbane

While they also offer up a range of bagels and sweet eats, sourdough is the item of choice at Cordelia’s (did the name give it away?). Boasting six types of the dense, perfectly chewy bread, Cordelia’s sourdough takes 72 hours to create from start to finish, and makes use of five different starters, one of which has been going strong for 34 years. Take your pick from the range of options including plain, seeded, light rye, caramelised onion, and cracked pepper—your sandwich has never looked better.
