Read on, Listers…the ultimate Italian feast awaits!
1889 Cucina Povera | Fitzroy North
A foodie fave amongst Fitzroy North locals, 1889 Cucina Povera is home to some of the best Italian food in Melbourne. From pizza with the perfect base (thin and oh-so-light!) to traditional Italian desserts, 1889 Cucina Povera is one of those neighbourhood gems you just have to try. It’s the gnocchi that we go crazy for though; soft, fluffy, melt-in-your-mouth deliciousness – we could eat it all day, every day….mmmm….
il.tavo | Nunawading
If you’re hungry and up for a bit of a drive, you have to drop by il.tavo – a terrific Italian restaurant located out in Nunawading. A bit of a hotspot in the area, il.tavo is well-known for using fresh seasonal ingredients and traditional methods to make some of the best pizza in town – the Prosciutto pizza is particularly ahhhhmazing! Feel like something a little meatier? The osso buco is equally as good. A must-try!
Fratellino Pizzeria | South Yarra
Ask any South Yarra local and they’ll tell you, Fratellino Pizzeria is one of the best Italian restaurants in Melbourne, hands down! With more toppings than you can poke a stick at (our fave is the Eggplant…you MUST try it!), Fratellino pizzas are baked to perfection in a woodfired oven, coming out all ooey, gooey, crispy, cheesy, and delicious. If you’re keen on dining in, get there early because Fratellino Pizzeria fills up quick. You have been warned!
Off The Boat | Reservoir
The day we discovered Off The Boat was a day we’ll forever remember – a cosy spot in Reservoir serving up some of Melbourne’s best Italian food. The memories of antipasti, fettuccine and pizza, glorious pizza, instantly make our bellies rumble – dammit, we wish we were eating there right now! Off The Boat also have an excellent Italian wine list, perfect for washing all that delicious food down.
Café Terroni | Yarraville
Owned and operated by one of the friendliest couples you’ll meet, Café Terroni in Yarraville is another one of our suburban Italian faves. The focus here is on Southern Italian food in all its fresh, uncomplicated, rustic glory with must-tries include the Penne alla Terroni (penne with grilled eggplant, zucchini, capsicum, olives and more) and the veal cutlets. Too delicious!
La Svolta | Prahran
One of only a few pizzerias in the country in possession of the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana accreditation, La Svolta make pizzas that are so authentic, you feel like you may as well be in Naples chowing down with friends. The pasta here is also downright delicious, however if you’re after something not so carb-heavy then you need to try the grilled spatchcock – marinated in a mix of lemon, chilli and rosemary, and served alongside some caponata.
Il Pizzaiolo | Thornbury
Our roundup of suburban Italian gems would never be complete with Il Pizzaiolo, a Thornbury based restaurant beloved by countless Northside locals. After eating there ourselves, we now know why – hellooooo pizza heaven! In all seriousness though, Il Pizzaiolo nail everything from the classic Margherita right through to meatier ones like the Diavola (spicy pork sausage, potato, peppers and rocket), which we’d probably marry if it were possible.
