If we didn’t already have enough things to do on the Sunshine Coast this month, the mammoth Horizon arts and culture festival is taking the whole event scene to nek level.
There’s over 200 events being held over 10 days, so to save you trawling through the program, we’ve rallied together seven Horizon events we don’t wanna miss. Catchya there?
Thicker Than Water World Premier | September 2
How often do we get to attend a world premier of anything on the Sunshine Coast? Answer: never! And that’s just one of the maaaany reasons you should grab a ticket to Caloundra Film Festival’s showing of Thicker Than Water. Others include: it’s actually a film debut by local gal, Madeleine Kennedy, you can get all heart eyes over naughties muso Pete Murray (he’s in the film and he’ll be waltzing down the red carpet. For reals!), and it won’t cost you a cent.
Horizon Ignites | September 2
With laneways bars, roving performers, buskers, street art, and more-ish around-the-world eats, Horizon Ignites is pretty much the opening party of this fest. If you’re chasing a party atmosphere but want to be tucked in bed by 10pm, jot this baby down.
Tidal X Limited Run Exhibition: Behind The Coast | September 4
Run in conjunction with Horizon, there’s no way we could overlook this creative shindig when pulling together our festival must-hits. Behind The Coast is a collab between Tidal Magazine and Limited Run, head to Ocean Street’s Axis Gallery to see awesome works by local artists, mingle with the cool cats (AKA interesting peeps), sip craft beer, and happily draw out the weekend that little bit longer.
REMIX Academy: Creative Cities | September 5
Before you bash us with your “nerd alerts”, this REMIX Academy event actually sounds pretty cool, and almost Ted-talkish. Exploring what makes a “successful creative city”, there’s a whole heap of international speakers on the runlist including Pozible’s co-founder and the Director of Cultural Development at the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership. If you’re into the arts, urban planning, or just like stimulating chatter, don’t miss this.
Surf film screening at A Pop-Up Cinema | September 8
All you salty seadogs and amateur surf-slash-ocean photographers, get out yo’ iPhones and set a reminder for September 8 when Shorebreak: The Clark Little Story screens at a pop-up cinema event at Moffat Beach Brewing Co. Entry is only 10 bucks, but bring a little extra for a round (or three) of those frothy brews. Not a bad way to spend a Thursday night, is it?!
The Umbilical Brothers | September 9
Be prepared to #lol as The Umbilical Brothers take to the stage with one their award-winning comedy show, Speedmouse. It’ll cost you just under $45 to bag a seat, and you’ll either laugh your pants off, or wet them. Either way, it’s going to be awkward.
MMVAF | September 10
It’s all about MMVAF come September 10. Taking over the Old Horton Park Golf Course, Matt Corby, Peking Duk, and Vera Blue are just some of the musos who’ll be belting out the tunes. And don’t get us started on the impressive visual artists that’ve come on board or the mouth-watering food offerings available. #somuchtodosolittletime.
