It’s not everyday we get word of a new monthly open-air cinema event that’s set to sweep the Coast and pop-up at some of our fave Sunshine Coast locations.
But when we do, we lose our shit. Seriously!
Who doesn’t love watchin’ a movie?! And when you put that baby on a screen outdoors, with canvas chairs, beanbags, street food, AND an old school popcorn cart at the ready, well, we don’t reckon it can be beat.
We’re not winding you up, this is real life. And it’s happening on the Sunshine Coast, every month from here on out, taking date nights to a whole new level.
Open Air Movie Nights is the off-screen (get it?) love creation of Roxy and Joel, two Sunny Coasters who wanted to bring a bit of city cool to the Coast, complete with a side of bright green AstroTurf, and a fair share of ceramic mushrooms and gnomes.
The idea is for the open-air cinema to pop up at parks, cafes, alleyways, restaurants, and even rooftops (keep reading!) across the Coast on the first weekend of each month. So basically, every time you perch on one of the supplied comfy seats, you’ll be in for a different experience.
Each night kicks off with live music, a short film from a Queensland filmmaker, a feature film, followed by lots of mingling. And drinking… did we mention these events are BYO?
Having raging success with their first two pop-up cinema events at the start of April at Caloundra’s Paisley Park and The Velo Project, the Open Air Movie Nights have just locked in the locations for May, and they’ve spilled the deets to Metropolist. Whoop!
Put a fat cross through your calendar on either May 5, 6 or 7, because cult film Pulp Fiction will be hitting the big screen. There will also be a stunning short film on free diving from Queensland filmmaker Cameron Marsh, who will also be on-hand for an open discussion following the showing.
Stretching from Caloundra to Twin Waters, Open Air Movie Nights May schedule is pretty epic with screenings taking place on a Maroochydore CBD rooftop, in a rainforest with a bonfire and a caribou plane acting as a screen mount, and a hidden village nook. We do not lie.
With about 35 seats available at each event, there’s not a lot of time to sit there contemplating. So check out the dates and locations below, and nab your tickets before you suffer a serious case of FOMO.
Thursday, May 5 | 4.30pm-9pm Rooftop screening on The Big Top Shopping Centre Carpark
Friday, May 6 | 4.30pm-9pm Intimate screening at Paisley Park in Caloundra
Saturday, May 7 | 4.30pm-9pm Rainforest setting at Novotel Twin Waters
