The Sunshine Coast’s First Poke Bar Is Finally Here!

The Sunshine Coast’s first dedicated poke bar has just popped up and we feel healthy just thinking about it. 

Throwing open its doors for the first time yesterday, Raw + Rice is the answer to the question every Sunshine Coaster has been asking for yonks: ‘When are we getting a poke joint?’

We’ve been watching enviously from afar, as our city neighbours have been treated to poke spot after poke spot, and now our time has finally come, and we couldn’t be more excited. 

If you’ve visited Hawaii or the USA or, more recently and closer to home, Brisbane and the Gold Coast, you may have come across poke bowls. But for those of you who have no idea what we’re going on about, let alone how to pronounce the damn thing (fyi, it’s poh-kay), it’s pretty much a good-for-you dish loaded with cubed, raw fish, brown rice, and the likes of edamame, zucchini, shredded beet, pickled cucumber, dried seaweed, ginger, coriander and all that sort of goodness. Sounds delicious, huh? 

Ben Glass and James Brust are the brains behind Raw + Rice, knowing how good poke bowls are and how much the Sunshine Coast was missing out by not having an eatery that focused solely on these babies. 

Over the past few months, the boys dreamt up the concept for Raw + Rice, landed the keys to the shopfront, and spent hours upon hours upon hours fitting out the space in a minimalist style with breeze blocks, foliage and lots of wood. This simple but beautiful backdrop gives the star of the show, AKA poke, a real chance to shine. 

The menu is succinct but has everything you’re going to need to get you through summer. Even the non-fish lovers are covered. There’s the option to choose your poke bowl based on a main filling—super fresh salmon, tuna, swordfish, soy tofu or poached chicken—or, you can Build Your Own Bowl, from the base (think: brown rice, sushi rice, quinoa or mixed greens) up, adding ingredients from mini categories such as The Protein, The Freshness, The Sauce and finally The Crunch. 

Wash it all down with a coconut water or a freshly bottled seasonal juice (made in-house with fresh produce from Erbacher’s), and it’ll be impossible not to fall in love with everything Raw + Rice is putting down. 

Open seven days a week, from 11am to 8.30pm, consider Raw + Rice as your direct line straight to poke heaven. Who knew passing on burgers could taste this good!?
