Kicking off this Thursday, the St Kilda Film Festival is one of the biggest events on every Melbourne film aficionado’s calendar. One of Australia’s best short film festivals, the St Kilda Film Festival proudly showcases both established and emerging talent in a jam-packed ten-day calendar.

To help you plan out all your movie needs over the next week, we’ve rounded up our favourite picks for the festival.

Opening Night

For indecisive film-heads, get a peek of the best of the best at the St Kilda Film Festival opening night. Showcasing a huge variety of short films including animation, comedy, documentaries and horror, our picks include the heart-wrenching drama The Flower Girl directed by Kaz Ceh and the action-filled, dramatic events in Discipline directed by Christophe M. Saber. Runs Thursday 19 May, 7.30pm. 

Wild At Heart         

If your piggy bank is feeling suspiciously light this month, don’t stress your film-loving head. Wild At Heart features talent from across Victoria with a program including music videos, documentaries and two live performances. Best of all—it’s completely free. Prepare to get wild on Saturday 28 May, 2pm. 

Australia’s Top 100

As the name implies, this showcase will boast every single one of Australia’s Top 100 short films! Running in set sessions throughout the festival, don't miss your chance to experience the best of this year’s entries. If you can't handle horror, you can choose between sessions boasting a certain theme, or go for a mix-n-match showcase featuring a variety of eclectic genres. Let’s be honest, you’ll want to see them all. Runs Friday 20 til Saturday 28 May at various times. 

Lost Laughs From The Past

Film traditionalists are catered for with Lost Laughs From The Past. Travel back into the 70s with a double screening of Australia's favourite indie short films. Showcasing Buckeye and Pinto, and Terror Lostralis, get your hands on tickets for these terrible funny cult classics. Runs Monday 23 May, 7.30pm.

I Love Live Music Competition

If you’re more of a music fan than a movie fan, you’ll love this showcase of ten short films! Featuring 60-second films championing themes around the importance of live Australian music, I Love Live Music will screen the top ten clips created by local Australian filmmakers. Runs Thursday 26 May, 7.30pm.

Short Black

Celebrating Indigenous short films produced by highly talented Indigenous directors Tracey Moffatt, Warwick Thornton and Richard Frankland, the dramatic, confronting movies in the Short Black showcase are promised to be some of the most moving in this year’s St Kilda Film Festival. You'd be a fool to miss it. Runs Wednesday 25 May, 7.30pm. 

Palm Springs International ShortFest

One of the largest showcases of short films in North America, check out this stunning handpicked selection of the best from 2015 Palm Springs right in Melbourne! The Palm Springs Film Festival features over 300 of the best short films from 40 countries every year. This year, the Palm Springs International ShortFest includes the high-charged short film Listen, directed by Rungano Nyoni and Hamy Ramezan. Runs Saturday 28 May, 5.30pm.

Australia’s Favourite Web Series

Need I say more? Runs Sunday 22 May, 2pm.
