Pies. They’re just a blob of ground meat wrapped in a bit of pastry, right? That may be so, but the humble meat pies are big business on the Sunshine Coast.

Just ask any tradie around smoko time what their go-to bakery snack is and the answer will be—a golden, flaky, delicious pie, of course!

Whether it’s a cold, bleak day at the soccer fields or you are feeling a little under the weather from a few too many tipples the night before, the pie will always bring some comforting and nurturing cheer to your belly.

It’s the ultimate comfort food, warming you up when times are tough. What I’m trying to say is, pies are here to help. Okay, we’re getting a little off track now. But you get the idea. Pies are king on the coast. So to that end, here’s our best pies on the Sunshine Coast!

Warana Beach Bakery

A pit stop for the tradies—this meat pie mecca not only services the suburb’s industrial and commercial workers, but surfers and beachy-types alike. Top of the Warana Beach Bakery list is the Ned Kelly Pie, featuring a whole egg and rasher of bacon. With its light, golden pastry you’ll get that extra special crunch, followed by a hit of full-throttle goodness. In fact, it tastes so good you won’t even feel guilty about having it for breakfast! Make those calories count, people.

Dough Fusion

So you think you like a steak and onion, huh? Well Dough Fusion has no ordinary steak and onion pie. Oh, no. This is a national award-winning CARAMELISED onion and chunky STEAK gourmet pie. Which just so happens to have won the coveted Best Gourmet Meat Pie in Australia, in Melbourne’s Great Aussie Meat Pie championships—hello! This is a pie of epic proportions, and it doesn’t stop there. This bakehouse has also won five golds and eight silver medals for their other pies. So stop your drooling and hightail it to Coolum, stat!

Dutchy’s Bakehouse

Never say never to a Netherlands pie. This authentic Dutch bakery may specialise in croquettes, oliebols and profiteroles, but its pies and sausage rolls will have you trading your pluggers for clogs! Owner Dutchy, a baker of almost 30 years, prides himself on “natural, quality products” with no added preservatives. A hit with the local Dutch community, uni students and those passing through town, the meat pies at Dutchy’s Bakehouse have to be seen to be believed.

CJ’s Pastries

With 22 different flavours—from Vegetable Mornay pies to Thai Chicken—you can see why Caloundra folk rate CJ’s high on their pie chart. This pastry heaven has been owned and operated by the Wells family since 1993, with their first store opening at Wamuran, growing to 15 stores in the Moreton Bay and Sunshine Coast regions. With 20+ years of pie baking under their apron, and all their products made with local ingredients, their pies are a sell-out.

Okay, so Beefy’s is also a part of a chain—yep, there’s a scattering of them across south-east Queensland—but this chain started right here on the Sunshine Coast in 1997, and let’s face it—they’re the best! It’s such an institution, in fact, that Beefy’s has become a tourist attraction of sorts, especially for motorists travelling between Brisbane and the Coast. The business has won multiple national awards (try their multi-award winning signature steak pie!), and is also home to the only gluten-free pie endorsed by Coeliac Australia.

Where: On the Coast, Beefy’s is at Aussie World, Bruce Highway, Buderim, and Glass House Mountains.

Bread on Buderim

Perched on top of Buderim, in a small, understated bakery is a pie that is the Hulk of all pies. Or perhaps you could call it, “a bucket of pie”. Whatever your terminology may be for this deep and full-bodied crust-alien (as opposed to crustacean, ya with me?), it’s bloody delicious. And it’s basically like two pies in one. So if you’re hungry, eating-for-two, or just really like pies (cos that’s okay too!), be sure to put this baby on your pie hunt, hit list and make a beeline to Bread on Buderim.

Hastings Street Bakery

“Tasty” would be an understatement when it comes to the meat pie artistry at this Noosa establishment. All the exquisite pies and pastries are handmade on the premises using fresh ingredients, premium meats, roasted vegies, and herbs and spices—all sourced locally! The melt-in-your-mouth butter pastry is full-bodied, flaky and golden. Well, we say yummo to that! Local faves are the steak and kidney, plain beef, and the Ned Kelly.
