And with a bang and a bam, January 2016 is here! Can you believe it!?
We’re still brushing off that cobwebby feeling from New Year’s Eve, but ‘cause we knew that was a given, here’s something we prepared a little earlier…
January in a well-constructed nutshell. Here’s what’s happening on the Sunshine Coast this month.
Mexican Night | January 2
The Shak is renowned for its healthy organic fare, but did you know they’re also pros at dishing up a Mexican feast? Not a regular occurrence, so it’s still pretty spesh, if you want to knock back organic sangria, nachos and burritos then wiggle your butt on up to Buderim town.
Where: 11/43 Burnett Street, Buderim
Peregian Originals | January 10
What better way to get into the groove of 2016 than with a laidback arvo at Peregian Originals. Grab a picnic blanket aka the nearest dry beach towel, load your bag with some crackers, cheese, and a bottle/s of whatever then get down to the park, for hours of tunes by This Way North, The Barleyshakes, Mapstone, and Soula. Easily one of the most chilled-out things to do on the Sunshine Coast.
Where: Peregian Beach Park, Peregian Beach
Frenzal Rhomb | January 14
Grommet nostalgia will hit an all-time high when this punk rock clan takes over Sol Bar. Taking you back to the days of backpack beach missions, poster-covered bedroom walls, icy cold Milos, and scoffing whole loaves of peanut butter toast, Frenzal Rhomb is your ticket back to the simple days.
Where: Solbar, 10/12-20 Ocean Street, Maroochydore
Twilight Markets | January 15
Sunset stroll, beachfront, markets…sounds like the perfect way to spend a summer evening, no? Then, what about stalls spilling with finger-lickin’ street food and gourmet sweets at the ready? Gotcha! And just as well, because the Twilight Markets in Caloundra (open from 5pm to 9pm) are totally worth the drive south for.
Where: Bulcock Beach Esplanade, Caloundra
Jimeoin – Yeehaa! | January 20
If you haven’t LOL-ed in a while, we feel sorry for you. Paying for laughs may not seem like the most romantic way to find momentary joy, but when it’s Jimoein and he’s hangin’ about on a stage at The J, you can count us in. You’ll cry like a baby, but we promise they’ll be happy tears.
Where: 60 Noosa Drive, Noosa Junction
Seafood Feast Night | January 21
Yeah, yeah. We know this is an every Thursday night kinda deal, but so you don’t miss out we’re reminding a brotha to lay it down in the calendar. Take your better/worse/okay half with you to Bistro C and for $85 you’ll dine on two courses of hot and cold seafood. And beachfront, no less. Beat the holiday crowds by getting all smart and stuff—book a table.
Where: 49 Hastings Street, Noosa Heads
Live Comedy at Nook and Cranny | January 21
Apparently January is all about the laughs. So if last night’s Jimeoin show left you in stitches but also wanting more, then back it up with a comedy gig at Nook and Cranny for 15 bucks. Headlining is Joe Shaffer with support acts including MJ Wong and Jasmine Fairbairn.
Where: 113 Currie Street, Nambour
Small Cinema | January 30
Small Cinema by Tidal Magazine will be a gathering of artists, environmentalists and those just interested in the world of film, to catch a geez at the Queensland premier of the Trash Tribe. Alongside this doco—where 10 people make it their mission to clean up three tonnes of trash in 10 days—there’ll be booze, live music, and other short films. Sounds like our kinda night!
Where: Shop 3, 22 Beach Road, Maroochydore
Slider and Cider Sundays | Every Sunday in January
Taps is coming to the Sunday table with a pretty epic offering. Each week when our fave day rolls around, the team at this self-service bar are pushing slider boards laid with three delicious combos and your choice of many a refreshing cider for 20 buck-a-roos. Chew and guzzle to the sounds of touring musos.
