Okay, okay, so I’m British and this makes me just a little bit biased; but you have to admit, we do know how to make a fine movie.
This year’s 2017 Cunard British Film Festival is back, and is set to be its biggest yet! For starts, there’s a slew of famous faces you’ll recognise, portraying everything from historic characters, gritty crime dramas, comedy (sarcasm is a true niche of us Brits) gripping documentaries—and that’s just for starts.
Also on the roll call for BIFF 2017 are a number of award-winning films, plus a handful likely to get the nod for an Oscar or two (don’t quote us, the Academy are a fickle bunch).
So here it is Brisbane, 5 reasons why you absolutely must check out the 2017 British Film Festival. Pimms at the ready!
#1. Catch Margot Robbie In A Childhood Throwback
An Aussie sweetheart-come-formidable actress slash all round great person, of course we’re going to get behind Robbie’s newest movie, Goodbye Christopher Robin! Based on the origin story of A. A. Milne’s beloved character Winne The Pooh (and co), this is one for all the family. Period drama and childhood memories? It’ll hit you right in the tear ducts, so BYO tissues!
#2. Get ALL The Feels Watching Breathe
Prepare to have your heart wrenched out by Claire Foy (The Crown) and Andrew Garfield (Spiderman, Hacksaw Ridge) in a career-defining performance. Based on the incredible true story of a young man diagnosed with polio, this inspiring tale is as heart-warming as it is truly devastating. Also, pretty much every British actor with a posh accent also features, so you know it’s going to be a classic in the making.
#3. Oscar Buzz Aplenty For Tulip Fever
With stellar performances from Alicia Vikander and Christoph Waltz (Oscar winners always get our vote), Tulip Fever is an intense ride from start to finish. Set in 17th century Amsterdam at the height of tulip mania, this visually stunning, totally tense and gripping film will render you unable to ever look at a bouquet of tulips ever again. Just saying…
#4. Move Over September Issue, Fashion’s Got A New Cult Movie
Okay guys keep calm, but there’s only a bloody documentary about Manolo Blahnik! This stunning feature-length film delves behind-the-scenes into the iconic shoe designer’s world, and features interviews from fashion heavyweights including Anna Wintour, Rihanna, Karlie Kloss and André Leon Talley. If you loved The September Issue, you will fall hard for Manolo’s charm—he’s a natural on-screen!
#5. Catch A Who Dunnit Classic!
A true British icon of the silver screen and the written word, a film festival dedicated to ol’ Blighty wouldn’t be worth a penny without an Agatha Christie classic thrown in. That’s why this year’s British Film Festival is showing four! From Evil Under The Sun, The Mirror Crack’d, Murder On The Orient Express and Death On The Nile; the murder mystery gang’s all here!
