Okay Melburnians, it is now well and truly freezing. Which means it’s even harder to justify splurging the moolah when you can be at home snuggling your hot water bottle. But luckily for us, Melbourne is offering up a bunch of free events to keep up busy and fighting the cold! From Firework Shows to Cards Against Humanity pub nights, we’ve got it all. Here’s 20 free things to do in Melbourne this July.
#1 Filter Coffee Brewing Classes
Padre coffee is offering up demos for filter brewings. Taste the coffee, learn the knowledge, and discover the key to making your morning cuppa as good as theirs. Sessions will run Monday to Friday from 12.30pm-1.00pm in their Royal Arcade shop!
#2 ‘Behind the Scenes’ tour at Temple Brewing Co.
Every Thursday, Temple Brewing Co. is opening up their doors to you lucky folks for a behind the scenes tour of the brewery! There’ll also be some food specials for you to nibble on after you snag a few taste tests.
#3 Brightest Comet
On July 1st, stare up at the sky to see a comet with a ridiculously long name (C/2013 X1 PanSTARRS – yep, we told you) reach its maximum brightness. You don’t need binoculars either, because you can see it with your naked eye. Pretty snazzy, right?
#4 Docklands Fireworks
Every Friday evening in July, there’ll be fireworks shooting off at the Docklands! They start at 7:30pm, and are the perfect place to bring your fam or stroll on a romantic date. Just because you’re a cheapskate, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t impress. And if you’re not feeling too stingy, maybe fork out for a scenic dinz on the water after?
#5 Winter Night Market
The Winter Night Market is the perfect place to snug up and take in Melbourne’s cultural street food scene. Entry is free so you can meander and scavenge for bargains for as long as you please. The market is open every Wednesday night throughout winter, so you can visit during all the chilly months. Maybe have some mulled cider and paella to warm up after you’re done schmoozing?
#6 Chocolate Afternoon Tea and Roald Dahl
If you loved Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as much as we do, then head down to the Southbank Library to celebrate ‘100 Years of Roald Dahl’ with a chocolate afternoon tea. Matilda lovers can battle it out with BFG fans to suss out the Dahl crowd favourite.
#7 4th July Apple Pie Event
Whisky and Alement are hosting an open house event on Monday July 4th to celebrate the American holiday! They’re launching their very own Melbourne Moonshine – Apple Pie Shine. This one will deffs have you smacking your lips with pleasure.
#8 European Night Market
Madame Brussels Lane is hosting European Night Markets every Friday night through July! Rug up and channel those European vibes for your weekend. Wonder around the stalls, smell the crepes, and be transported to a mini European experience.
#9 Light in Winter at Fed Square
Celebrating its tenth anniversary, the Light in Winter at Fed Square will feature a bunch of free activities for the entire fam bam. There’ll be light installations, campfires and live music – all to help you beat the winter chill.

#14 Bastille Day French Festival

#17 Open House Melbourne
The Royal Botanical Gardens are opening up the doors to 2 of their most historical buildings – the Plant Craft Cottage and Melbourne Observatory! These heritage-listed buildings show you Melbourne’s historical side, and you can have a peak through one of the historic telescopes.
#18 Street Art Hunt
Melbourne is known for having some of the best street art in the world, so isn’t it about time you went and explored it? Whether it be tackling the tourists in Hozier Lane, or meandering down the alleys off Acland Street, this makeshift graffiti tour promises to impress. #19 Gertrude Street Projection Festival
Gertrude Street is lighting up from dusk until midnight, and the entire street will become an illuminated outdoor gallery! Some of the best international projection artists will work their magic to make their psychedelic visions come to life.
#20 Unplugged Live at NGV
If you didn’t have a chance to make it down in June, there’ll be two more Unplugged Live sessions at the NGV during July. You guys can pop in and see Dan Kelly or Ali Barter – or both! These Sunday jams will help you dance away your winter blues, and you don’t even need to spend a cent to do it.
