Brunswick Street’s Brother Burger and the Marvellous Brew are opening up a second store southside, because when you’re flipping some of Melbourne’s best burgers, it’s only fair to spread the love. It’s close to three years since Marcelo Tummino’s burger mecca launched, and adding a new addition to the family seems like the perfect way to celebrate. Brother Burger and the Marvellous Brew’s second offering will open May 6th and the new location will be the old Café Greco on Chapel Street. The diner décor will be much the same as the original location, and inspection of their new Facebook page suggests some comfy red booths we’re aching to slide into.
Whoever said beer gardens belong in the back of an establishment were clearly misinformed, as it will be the first area to welcome punters into the new location. Brother Burger and the Marvellous Brew (the sequel) will be bigger than the original. Literally, about 40 seats larger, feeding a capacity of 200 burger fiends at one time. The new venue has installed 15 taps for all of the craft beer goodness, compared to the original’s 9 taps. There will also be later trading hours on the South-side, open until 2am for Fridays and Saturdays, and they will be able to cater for larger groups with communal tables that sit between 12 and 14.
For Tummino, the opening couldn’t come fast enough, “It’s amazing to be spreading the love south and delivering quality hand-made comfort food in a relaxing and fun place. The whole journey has been exciting, from first finding the space, to its planning, design, decking it out and now building the team to be ready to open.”
While there won’t be any significant differences in menu between the two venues, the South Yarra Brother Burger offering will be providing two new salads, and a South Yarra Rueben to replace the Fitzroy Reuben. Thankfully they’ll be sticking with their excellent tried and true recipe, from their outstanding wagyu burgers and homemade buns, to their impressive list of home made sauces—where else do you get a selection that includes both chilli jam and blue cheese sauce? At Brother Burger the beers rotate weekly, and their craft beer selection at any one time is something to get excited about. If you want to know ahead of arrival what they’ve got on tap, check out their Facebook page for an updated list of Australian craft beers and ciders.
So for all of the southsiders who are about to be introduced to Brother Burger, what does Tummino recommend? “My favourite combination changes all the time. At the moment it’s the Hot Stuff, enjoyed with pale ale from our list of hand-crated beers, which changes every week. I’ve also been known to regularly enjoy the Oh Brother burger. Quality hand-made burgers with independent craft beer, that’s what Brother Burger is all about. Experience them together and best of all, with friends.”
