The 5 Dishes You Need To Get You Through The Rest Of Winter

In (gloomy) times gone by, winter foods simply meant soup, casserole and more soup. Fear not, friends! Melbourne’s food scene is now such that you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to belly warmers. But who has the best?

Weeeelllll, lucky for you, we tracked down a small, and rather unsuspecting little joint in Collingwood that, in our humble opinion, is dishing up the best selection of finger lickin’ winter dishes. Welcome, Son In Law.

Thai Green Curry

When you’ve got something as great as a traditional Thai green curry, it’s safe to say that you don’t want to mess with it too much. Son In Law have put their own twist on this crowd pleaser, adding Thai basil, kaffir lime leaves, soft shell crab and tiger prawns. As far as seafood curries go, we challenge you to find better.

Cashew Chicken

If you like a bit of ‘heat’ in your heat, the cashew chicken is going to be right up your alley. A lip-smacking mixture of roasted cashews, plenty of chilli jam and vegetables makes this one to warm thy soul. It comes with chicken, but you’re welcome to leave it out and make it a vegan option.

Massaman Curry

Big fan of loooow and slooooow?  Yeah, us too. Son In Law’s massaman lamb curry will treat you to a whole lamb shank on the bone, ready to fall apart in your curry. Accompanied by cinnamon, roasted cashews and sweet potato, this is the one we order when we don’t know what to order.

Prawn Tom Yum

You think you’ve had Tom Yum before, but really, until you’ve had Son In Law’s famed version, you’ve barely lived. A classic recipe from the owner’s mother in law, it’s packed with carrot, onion, coriander, tomato, kaffir lime leaf, lemongrass and mushrooms. It’s the sort of dish we turn to when we need a comforting hug.

Steamed Barramundi

Picture this: a hefty portion of the freshest barramundi, steeped in chilli, lime, garlic and white lettuce, accompanied by a light but spicy broth. Now THAT’S how we like our seafood in winter. 

Roasted Duck Leg

Son In Law's roasted duck leg is a menu special. Sitting in a delicious spicy broth, it's balanced out with lychee, tomato, Thai basil and vegetables. If that's not an ultimate winter warmer, we don't know what is!
