While you were lamenting the closure of Miss Katie’s Crab Shack at The Public Bar in North Melbourne (never fear, it’s popped back up at The Rochester in Fitzroy), we had our eyes placed firmly on the iconic hotel’s kitchen. Finally, the team has announced its latest venture and, Listers, it’s a mouthful! Say hello to Sir Chicory St. Claire's Sanctioned Digestive Parlour.
While Sir Chicory St. Claire's Sanctioned Digestive Parlour might sound posh, the foodie fare focuses on two of the most humble (albeit delicious) beer-accompanying favourites—sandwiches and subs. The venue is also home to one of Melbourne’s most extensive hot sauce collections—perfect for you spice fiends.
You’ll recognise some sandwich classics, such as the reuben—salt beef, sauerkraut and cheese on rye—and the ultimate BLT, but there are some innovative items on there too. The pulled spicy rabbit roll will give any pulled pork sarnie a run for its money, and the drunken grilled cheese sandwich adds beer to the traditional cheese and onion combo with epic results. Genius!
As for the potato gem and jalapeno mash sub, which comes topped with Napoli sauce and melted cheese, well, what can I say? I’ll be heading straight for this one when I’m next seeing out a post-Saturday night hangover in The Public Bar’s front room, sipping on a Coopers and lemonade (aka the drink of champions) as I have done many weekends before now.
Sir Chicory St. Claire's Sanctioned Digestive Parlour is open and serving as of now, which is great news for any of you headed to The Public Bar to check out some awesome local live music in Melbourne, or for a catch-up over pints with mates.
