Where To Get The Ultimate Parisian Breakfast In Melbourne

By Sophie Colvin - 07 Jul 2016

We’ve all got a bit of a travel bucket list. You know how it goes, InNOut Burgers in NYC, Pizza in Rome and crêpes in Paris. Alas, some of these things are on the back-burner of life right now, leaving us to day dream about authentic, delicious, bucket-list-worthy foods.

On the crêpes front, the good news is we’ve found Melbourne’s very own crêperie that more than equals those you’ll find in France, in La Petite Crêperie.

Okay, it might not be the Champs de Elysees but the good news is, that La Petite Crêperie is 100% the real deal. From the décor to the freshly made crêpes and the selection of toppings and fillings, everything is as legit as you could possibly hope to find in our little corner of the world, far, far away from the foodie streets of Paris. And in our humble opinion they’re JUST as good… if not better. (yes, we’ve been to Paris!)

You probably know La Petite Crêperie as the gorgeous licensed cafe on Hardware Lane. Or maybe the cute little kiosk on Swanston Street that dishes up sweet crêpes to take away. Well, there’s now a third spot for you to get your hands on perfect crêpes— they’ve opened a cafe at the rear of Exchange Tower, just off Gallagher’s Place (Head down Gallagher's Place and turn in to the little alley behind Exchange Tower. You'll find La Petite Crêperie at the end of the alley on the right!) This week-day cafe has a top-notch selection of baguettes, takeaway breakfast dishes, and, you guessed it, a full, finger lickin’ selection of crêpes to be enjoyed in or taken away.

La Petite Crêperie have hit the nail on the head with every crêpe and baguette option. They keep it simple (how very French) on both fronts. The baguettes include breakfast and lunch options. The breakfast baguettes are particualrly mouth-watering - they're cooked on demand and include quality European cheeses and are the perfect starter to the day, especially if you're in a rush. The rest of the French baguettes are all $9.50 and are made daily with a range of fresh salad, premium Barkly Smokehouse meats including ham, chicken and lamb, European cheeses and home made French mayonnaise or mustard - the ultimate affordable lunch option.

The crêpe menu is split in to two—sweet and savoury. The savoury options are concise, allowing you to choose individual ingredients to add to your crêpes, including cheese, egg, ham, tomato, chicken, mushrooms and goat’s cheese, all perfect produce to build an epic authentic French snack.

On the sweet crêpe front, we need to give you the heads up: It’s going to be a tricky choice. There are the stock-standard spreads, think a selection of jams, marmalade and honey. And then the crowd favourites of sugar and butter, cinnamon, or lemon. For something even sweeter, check out the maple syrup, home made salted caramel or Nutella spreads. If you’re feeling a little fancy, we HIGHLY recommend the Nutella and almonds or the salted caramel and almonds. Want to go all out? Treat yo’ self and grab a Nutella with either banana or strawberries. Whether it’s a quick breaky before you hit the office or an indulgent snack to heave yourself out of that 3pm slump, this little Parisian gem is by far our pick of the bunch.

You can find the full La Petite Crêperie | Gallagher's Place breakast menu here and lunch menu here. You'll find La Petite Crêperie | Gallagher's Place tucked away behind Exchage Tower.
