You might have missed the news, but the official 2018 Pantone is ‘Ultra Violet’: a purple people-eater, Grimace from McDonalds sort of colour. It’s the colour of questionable childhood bedroom wallpaper and bad 80s sci-fi.
And for one day this month, it’ll be the colour of Melbourne Central.
Yep, MC is chucking a huge Ultra Violet party this week, as part of the annual Shop The City celebrations. Pantone says ‘Ultra Violet’ is “inventive and imaginative”. Apparently it “points us toward the future”, as long as that future is purple. Melbourne Central have taken that brief and run with it, and it looks like this...
There’ll be a tarot reader in the centre predicting your future (heads up, it’s touch and go), a very ‘grammable Ultra Violet Room, decked out in purple props, a giant purple bath and neon lighting and a purple chocolate fountain where you can dip free marshmallows and dust them in purple glitter. You can even get free purple fairy floss.
Need a kicker? The guys are launching a pop-up Ultra Violet Naked Negroni Bar (don’t worry, the Negronis are naked, not the patrons). Inside there’ll be mad scientists in lab coats mixing purple cocktails in test tubes.
Once you’re hydrated, hit up the Pop-Up Violet Market, stuffed with local makers and foodie vendors, including Bistro Morgan doughnuts and Cupcake Central (ten guesses what colour the cupcakes will be).
Where: Melbourne Central
When: 10am – 10pm, Friday 18 May
