On one hand it can be exciting when Mum comes to town, but on the other hand it can be god-awful stressful when you have no idea what to do with her. Fortunately, we’ve seen enough of this glorious city (and so have our mums!) to know exactly what’ll tickle her fancy and send you straight into the good books.
Here’s everything you should eat, drink and do when you mum next comes to Melbourne.
Brekkie At Higher Ground
If you’re looking to wow the pants off your mum (especially if she’s an out-of-towner), then you need to hotfoot it straight to Higher Ground as soon as she wakes up. This is namely because it’s one of the most flawlessly beautiful venues in the city, but also because it gets absolutely chokkas at almost every hour of every day, so get there early.
Lunch At Uncle
Like your mum, Uncle is clean, classy and constantly filling your plate with as many veggies as possible. This Asian-fusion CBD restaurant has a lengthy and delicious a la carte menu, however, you can also opt for the ‘lunchtime quickie’ for only $28 which basically fills you with as many tasty treats (like mini soft shell crab banh mi and edamame beans) as your poor tum can handle. Don’t forget to peruse their delicious cocktail menu too...
High Tea At The Stables Of Como
No visit from Mum is complete without high tea, and why half-ass it when you can go to the Stables of Como where for $65 you’ll get free-flowing mimosas, finger sandwiches, cakes, tarts, slices, tea and coffee. Plus it all comes with a complimentary backdrop of some of the most tranquil gardens in Melbourne.
Dinner At Transformer Fitzroy
If your mum happens to live life sans-meat, or just likes to come out of dinner without a food baby or four, and also loves ritzy venue decor, then Transformer Fitzroy is sure to get her heart racing. Decked out in walls of lush flora and a menu packed with healthy vegetarian dishes, there’s almost nothing your mum won’t love about dinner at Transformer Fitzroy (unless she’s a carnivore who can’t even stand to look at plants). Make sure you book ahead, tables often fill up weeks in advance.
Early Afternoon Wines At Naked In The Sky
Naked In The Sky is the rooftop at Naked For Satan and by-golly if there’s anything that should be on your list when friends or family come to town, it’s this Melbourne hotspot. High in the sky and framed by glass, this rooftop bar is the perfect sanctuary for a quick vino or two while the sun’s out in the early arvo. These guys specialise in vodka but they stock almost anyone’s poison. They also have a great snack menu if mum’s feeling a bit peckish.
Pre-Dinner Aperol Spritz At The QT Rooftop
If your mum loves locking eyes with C-list Aussie celebrities, then get her up to the QT rooftop toot sweet. Former Bachelor and Bachelorette contestants have been known to swarm at this gawj sky-high bar. Even if Mum’s not a reality telly addict like we are, the view is worth the trip alone, plus they make a mean Aperol spritz up there.
Post-Dinner Cocktails At Bar 1806
If your mum’s more of a cocktail lady, then nothing will impress her more than a visit to Bar 1806. The cocktail pros there have literally won national awards for their boozy beverages, plus the quaint and intimate venue is a refreshing contrast to the rest of the packed rooftop bars in the city.
Have A Cultural Morning At The National Gallery Of Victoria
Not only does the NGV have world-class exhibitions like Dior and Van Gogh on rotation but they also have a fantastic permanent collection upstairs that won’t cost you a cent to catch a glimpse of. There’s even a cafe downstairs if she hasn’t had her double-shot latte yet, plus the design store is a work of art in itself (a visit will no doubt give your bank account a hard knock).
Catch A Live Gig At The Sidney Myer Music Bowl
Nestled in the Kings Domain Garden is the biggest summertime entertainment venue in the city—the Sidney Myer Music Bowl. All summer long this outdoor amphitheatre plays host to live gigs, performances and plays. On the roster this summer is Lorde, Midnight Oil, the Pop-Up Globe Theatre, Paul Kelly, Lana Del Ray, The XX and a bunch of MSO free concerts, plus even more. Grab mum, check the upcoming events on the website and pencil in a glorious afternoon of entertainment in the gardens.
Catch A Movie At The Astor Theatre
If your mum’s an old-fashioned kinda gal, then take her to a screening at the Astor Theatre in St Kilda. This old gal (the theatre that is, not your mum) is a classic, single-screen revival movie theatre that plays a combination of old and new films (often one after the other) and also stocks the best homemade choc tops in the whole damn universe. You can check out movies and session times on their website.
By now you will have knocked the rest of your siblings off the brownie points leaderboard and are on track to getting the best Christmas present of your life. You’re welcome.
