As much as I love going out for brunch, it can fill me with anxiety. Usually, that’s because I inevitably have to decide between sweet or savoury—and sometimes that’s just too damn hard. That is why whoever came up with the concept of a breakfast board is—in my humble opinion—the absolute MVP of food. God bless you for never making me choose between my smashed avo and my acai bowl.
Here are Melbourne’s best breakfast boards.
Go to this gem in Carnegie any day of the week and I’m willing to bet you’ll have to wait for a table at Left Field. Left Field is from the team behind Tall Timber, Rustica Canteen and Short Straw, so you know you’ll be in for a good feed. Their brekky board features wild muesli and yoghurt, smashed avo with a poached egg and a side of OJ.
The team behind Collective Espresso and Miss Frank bring you a ‘Bit of This, Bit of That’. Featuring a mini acai bowl, mini croissant and a mini smashed avo with a poached egg and an OJ. The breakfast board at Temperance Society has you covered all the way from savoury to sweet.
Caffeine lovers rejoice! Clifton Hill’s Mixed Business offers a breakfast board in the form of their ‘mixed continental’. Featuring small fruit and yoghurt, buttered leek, coddled egg and soldiers as well as your choice of OJ, tea or coffee to wash it down.
You’ll find a breakfast board for the adventurous at Auction Rooms in North Melbourne. Feast on their delectable combo of grilled chorizo, smoked trout rillettes, potato hash, a soft boiled egg, rye soldiers, granola and a super smoothie. They’ll be rolling you out of there.

This cute little corner café in Richmond has well and truly joined the breakfast board club. Serving up the well-loved classic combination of muesli, yoghurt and macerated berries with a poached egg on ciabatta with dukkah, hummus and some smashed avo. Don’t worry—they’d never forget the OJ on the side.
The hottest new kid on the Camberwell block, Legacy calls their breakfast board ‘Little Somthin’ Somethin’’ and combines an acai bowl, a croissant, smashed avo with an egg and an OJ. Given that Legacy is from the team behind My Other Brother, The Collective and Boss Pizzeria you’re in for a treat!
One of the OG’s of the Melbourne breakfast scene, Prahran’s Tall Timber serves up their very own spin on the breakfast board. On your board you’ll find a poached egg on ciabatta with dukkah, hummus and smashed avo as well as a bowl of muesli with vanilla bean yoghurt topped with macerated berries. Of course, you’re going to be parched after devouring all of that, so they throw in some OJ on the side.
