If the words ‘Cowboy Bebop’, ‘Ladybeard’ and ‘cosplay’ generate no meaning inside your brain, this might not be the festival for you.
IF however, you’re a massive fan of Japanese anime (think Sword Art Online, Neon Genesis, Naruto and, yes, even Dragon Ball Z) you need to get your ass down to the Exhibition Centre on 4 & 5 November. Because the Madman Anime Festival is back, and it’s looking ridic.
For starters, there’ll be in-depth showcases from Attack on Titan and Cowboy Bebop, exclusive screenings of Mary and the Witch’s Flower (the inaugural flick from Studio Ponoc), an illustrator market and the full-blown, totally bizarre National Cosplay Finals, where Madman will select the country’s best cosplayer.
But the biggest news of all is that Aussie ex-pat Ladybeard, the Japanese cross-dressing sensation, is GOING TO BE THERE IN PERSON. For outsiders, it’s hard to explain how significant this really is. Just google ‘Ladybeard’ and you’ll get an idea of the cultural frenzy surrounding this guy (aka wrestler Rick Magarey, from Adelaide). Ladybeard will be performing live, doing a panel show, and signing many many (many) autographs.
There's a good litmus test for this festival: if you've never set foot inside Minotaur on Elizabeth St, you probably won't understand a whole lot of what's going on.
