12 Awesome Things To Do In Melbourne This Australia Day Long Weekend

By James Shackell
25th Jan 2018

Hear that, Melbourne? That’s the sweet sound of a long weekend approaching. As you might have guessed—Melbs is going into meltdown over the next three days. There’s ice-cream gelato parties, food truck fiestas, $1 pork buns, Corona sessions and the buffet to end all buffets. Netflix on the couch is NOT an option.

We’ve already wrapped events on Aus Day, but here’s 11 more things to do this Australia Day long weekend. Get around it.

All Weekend

Corona Sunset Sessions At Crown

It might actually be illegal to drink Corona without a sun setting behind the bottle. (We’re just going by their commercials.) Well Crown seems to agree, because they’re hosting a wicked Corona Sunset Session from 19 January to 4 February. Check it out on the Riverwalk. There’s buckets, banging tunes and all the Mexican food you can eat. Not a bad way to spend a Friday.

Where: Crown Riverwalk, Southbank
When: Till 4 February 2018

Beer Ice-Cream At Tallboy & Moose

Not a typo, guys. Tallboy and Moose has teamed up with the legends at Billy van Creamy to bring Melbourne a couple of very special beers...in ice cream format. There are two new beer ice-cream flavours (A Russian stout with cream and a Kiwi fruit sour sorbet) plus the classics like choc and vanilla. You can even get beer ice-cream spiders. Now we've heard it all...

Where: Tallboy & Moose, 270 Raglan St Preston
When: All weekend

Ascot Lot ‘Straya Day Festival

Melbourne’s newest food truck park has decided to go all out for Aus Day this year. They’re throwing a three-day festival, full of food, booze and Triple J’s Hottest 100. Kicking off on Friday, you can expect Aussie-themed food trucks like Boss Burger and Meat Me Here’s boutique sausage sizzle. There’s also Pimm’s Cups up at the bar, and your pooch is welcome too.

Where: Ascot Lot, 448-462 Mt Alexander Rd, Ascot Vale
When: Friday (5-10pm), Saturday (11am-10pm), Sunday (11am-9pm)

Priscilla Queen Of The Desert

One for the musical buffs out there. The cult Aussie flick has come to Melbourne’s Regent Theatre, and tickets are available as we speak. Priscilla’s early reviews have been stellar, and you know the costumes are gonna be OTT to the max. Grab Mum and Dad, lock in a date and go get your glam on.

Bank account feel like it’s been hit with a recession? You need Misschu’s epic $1 pork buns this Australia Day. Australia Dinner Buffet At Melba

You’re gonna need bigger pants for this. The Langham’s Melba buffet is throwing a huge Australia Day bash, with enough courses to destroy an average African hippopotamus. The Aus-themed dinner includes: Tasmanian oysters, spit-roasted Aussie lamb, Damper with Yarra Valley venison, sprinkled lamingtons and Rosella rocky roads. Just don’t fill up on spuds. Rookie mistake.

Saturday 27 January

Bondi Sands Pool Party

PSA: The ultimate Bondi Sands pool Party is being held at Caulfield Racecourse and it’s looking like the event of the season. What does a pop-up pool party at the Caulfield Racecourse look like? Try relaxing pool-side summer lounges (oooh), live DJs dropping *phresh* tracks all day long (aaah) and a gourmet summer barbecue where chefs will literally be throwing shrimp on the barbie around the clock (SHUDDUP AND TAKE MY MONEY). The day couldn’t get me ‘Straya if it tried. Check out all the details here.

When: Saturday, January 27th

Sunday 28 January

Midsumma Pride March

Midsumma’s iconic Pride March is back again this Sunday. If you haven’t got involved with the festival yet, now’s your chance (we know—there’s a LOT going on in Melbs right now). Make sure to hang around for the post-Pride celebrations in Catani Gardens. It’s running till 7pm.
