Well, we’re right into the depths of winter now, and the temperature is definitely reflecting that.

Melbourne in winter means inside-warming drinks, outside-warming open fires, and events every single day of the week.

Get stuck into the best events happening in Melbourne this July.

QV’s Winter Night Market

Melbourne’s favourite midweek market has returned once again, bringing with it some deliciously spiced mulled wine, pasta tossed in a wheel of cheese, and the infamous seafood paella.

All of your old favourites are back in the largest market in the southern hemisphere, plus a bunch of new and exciting food stalls to try and artisan shopping to browse, with log fires to keep you warm.  As always, they’ll be free roving entertainment, live music performances, locally-made retail stores to browse and a silent disco.

What: Winter Night Market
Where: Queen Vic Market
When: Wednesdays throughout July, 5 pm - 10 pm

NGV Friday Nights

Each Friday starting on the 31st of June, NGV will once again extend their hours and welcome a range of contemporary artists to the gallery to perform alongside the new Terracotta Warriors exhibition.  This June you will have the chance to experience the transcendent sounds of Melbourne singer Amaya Laucirica, witness NGAIIRE’s high energy live show and stellar vocals, groove to the raw talent of new wave rocker Sloan Peterson, and boogie with the cheeky St Kilda boys from Approachable Members Of Your Local Community.

Your ticket will include access to the exhibitions, there’ll be dumplings on offer supplied by the good folk at Hutong Dumpling Bar, because what’s a Friday without a few cheeky late-night dumplings?

European Night Market

The European Night Market on Madame Brussels Lane is back once again to give you a taste of Europe right here in chilly old Melbourne. Forget your Instagram pals posting photos from the Amalfi Coast and dive into food from the likes of Frencheese, Eat Cannoli, Pierogi Pierogi, and more. This year's event has taken up 30% more space than in previous years, so it's going to be big.

What: European Night Market
Where: Madame Brussels Lane, 50 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne
When: Every Friday throughout July, 5pm to 10pm

Marvel: Journey Of Heroes

If you’re a Marvel fanatic, then head over to the Shot Tower in Melbourne Central next month and shower your eyes with 80 years worth of Marvel art.

From July 5, Marvel will be celebrating its 80th year anniversary with an exhibition called Marvel: Journey of Heroes, which honours iconic characters that have been brought to life by Marvel’s vivid storytelling. So, if you’re a bit fuzzy on the Marvelverse but enjoy the odd Avengers movie or two, this might be a great chance to get up to speed on all the characters.

What: Marvel: Journey Of Heroes

Gertrude Street Projection Festival

Prepare for your eyes to be blessed with some of the most epic light installations going around. One weekend in the middle of Winter each year, the south end of Fitzroy transforms into a colourful illuminated outdoor museum.

No surface will be left in the dark: footpaths, shop fronts, alleyways, and of course the many galleries along Gertrude will all be awash with the work of local artists. Rug up, brave the sub-zero temperatures and see Gertrude Street as you’ve never seen it before.

What: Gertrude Street Projection Festival
Where: Gertrude Street, Fitzroy
When: 26 July - 3 August
