What's Trending in december

Keeping up with the best events, new openings, pop ups, and good things to eat in Melbourne is no mean feat (and we would know!). To make your life that little bit easier, and because we love a good list, we’ve teamed up with Peroni to bring you What’s Trending: A one-stop guide to everything worth checking out in your city this month, so you won’t miss a thing.

Summer is finally here (it was feeling like it wasn’t going to come there, for a little while) and to celebrate, Melbourne is turning it on with a ton of festive activities, fun frivolities and new openings. Here are our top ten picks for December.

#1. Stokehouse Re-Opens!

Melbourne institution Stokehouse is re-opening in stages. And what glorious stages they are! Following the unveiling of Paper Fish and Pontoon, we’re finally going to get to welcome Stokehouse, the main feature of the precinct, back again. Opening on the 9th of December, you can expect the very best in seafood and views.

#2. Beautifully Designed Bars Make Celebrations More Fun

We’ve gone totally cuckoo for beautifully designed bars; places that serve top-notch drinks AND get that we want to do it in style. Richmond’s The Ugly Duckling is our leader of the pack – the light-filled interior includes plenty of natural materials and is completely weather proof – perfect for this moody Melbourne weather.

#3. Gelato With A Twist

Melbourne has long been an enthusiastic gelato aficionado—hello Gelato Messina, Piddapipo, N2 Extreme Gelato and the rest of the icy gang. As we welcome summer with open arms, we’re excited by our discovery of fun new ways to feast on gelato: enter Long Story Short. Though not strictly a gelateria, the Port Melbourne café serves gelato in a brioche bun and we can hand on heart say it’s one of the most magical dishes we’ve eaten in a long time.

#4. Make The Most Of Warm Evenings With Moonlight Cinemas

Moonlight Cinemas at The Botanical Gardens is on again and tickets are on sale. There’s a top-notch selection of new releases, family friendly flicks and old favourites. Pack a picnic blanket, a bit of a feast and a few drinks (we’ll be taking some Peroni) and get there early to nab yourself a prime spot.

#5. Armadale Gets A Café With A Rooftop

In case Melbourne’s south side didn’t have enough stellar cafes, Moby 3143 has entered the scene in Armadale. And we can happily say it’s a welcome edition. Set over three levels, it includes a rooftop garden—perfect for enjoying your brekky in the sun. Drawing inspo from Ottolenghi and other top Melbourne cafes you can expect to find plenty of salads and guilt-free brunch dishes – perfect for the onslaught of summer!

#6. Market Shopping Is The Best Christmas

We’ll be doing a big chunk of our Christmas shopping at Markit@FedSquare. It’s an eclectic market that’s a hive of Melbourne’s best design, art and gifts and we can guarantee you’ll find something for that super hard-to-buy-for aunt. Pop along on Sunday the 11th.

#7. Real Christmas Trees Bring All The Feels

Christmas has to be our favourite time of year. Not just for all the food and celebrations (though that’s a big part of it!) but for the festive feel and intricate traditions. The Christmas tree is so symbolic of all of this, and there’s something childhood-inducing and magical about the smell of fresh trees. There are plenty of places that you can buy real trees, both cut and potted. Our top pick is Garden Of Eden, one of Melbourne’s most extensive (and beautiful) nurseries. They’ll be able to fix you up with something to fit your space, no matter how small. And the best bit? You don't need to cut down a tree! Just undecorate a potted tree and shift it outside for the other 11 months of the year!

#8. Summer Means Picnics

Is there anything better than a perfect picnic?! We think not. We’re well versed in hosting picnics and have scouted out a few spots around the city that are licensed, meaning you can (responsibly) enjoy a beverage without breaking the law. For all the best picnic pointers, check out this guide.

#9. Fed Square Live Is Here!

Fed Square Live returns this summer with a blistering line up of indie, electronica and soul performances by Australia’s independent and emerging acts. Running fortnightly until February, you’ve got plenty of time to catch a gig. The best bit? It’s free!

#10. Book Your Prime Position At Portsea Polo

The social event of the year, Portsea Polo is nearly upon us. Though it’s not until the new year, December is for ticket buying – you’ll need to hop to it if you want a prime, polo watching position.

You could WIN a luxury weekend for two at the Portsea Polo, Victoria, with Peroni this January!
