Where To Get Cultured In Melbourne After Dark

By Phoebe McRae
2nd Feb 2017

Getting your daily, weekly, monthly or even yearly dose of culture can be tough. We know. We get it. You’re just super busy finishing your third Netflix series of the week (no judgey eyes, we promise).

That’s why we’ve teamed up with Wilson Parking to bring you this neat little list of the best cultural events happening in Melbourne this February. They’re all on after dark, so you can’t use work as an excuse. #Sorrynotsorry.

Go with your mate (or a date) and don’t let the idea of parking scare you off because Wilson Parking totally lets you Book-A-Bay (yes, you can pay with Amex) and secure yourself a park, without the stress, before you even leave the office. Genius?

White Night Melbourne

Various locations throughout Melbourne

Every year when February rolls around we get giddy with excitement at the thought of staying up all night (literally) and going to bed at 8am sans judgement (we’re looking at you morning exercise bunnies). If you’ve never heard of this magical night, it’s called White Night and it’s basically a 12-hour celebration of all things culture, creative and colourful in Melbourne. The city’s streets, parklands, laneways, public spaces and more are completely transformed, and it’s definitely better than being boring and going to sleep. Book-A-Bay in the CBD and see every sight without the inconvenience of public transport.

When: From 7pm 18th February to 7am 19th February
Where: Various locations throughout Melbourne
Cost: Entry is free (bookings essential)

Viktor & Rolf: Fashion Artists @ NGV

Fashion is culture (duh!) so get your cultural injection from the geniuses known as Viktor & Rolf at NGV Friday Nights. Not only will you get to witness the spectacle that is the Dutch designers’ avant-garde creations (and loads more), there will be live performances by international and Australian acts (think Olympia and PVT) in the Great Hall and DJ sets in the NGV Garden so you can get down and boogie.

When: From 6pm on Fridays until 26th February
Where: National Gallery of Victoria
Cost: $30

Lonsdale Street Greek Festival

Everyone knows that street parties are the best parties, so get amongst the 30th Lonsdale St Greek Festival for some serious zorba, spanakopita and guaranteed good times. Book-A-Bay nearby, bring your dancing shoes and stay well into the night. We also advise stretchy pants so you can eat bulk gyros, Moussaka and baklava in comfort. You can thank us later.

When: Saturday 25th February
Where: Lonsdale Street, CBD
Cost: $30

Zoo Twilights

Zoo Twilights is a must for any true music lover. Even if you don’t like live music, the close proximity to cute animals is sure to put a smile on your dial and set you up for one hell of a good night. Sit back, relax and enjoy a sunset picnic (the charcuterie boards are next level), then re-live the glory days of banging around to Jet (you know the ones) or get down and boogie to The Reubens. You don’t even have to worry about parking because you can Book-A-Bay way in the advance and avoid the dreaded parking fine.

When: Fridays & Saturdays until March 11th
Where: Melbourne Zoo, Parkville
Cost: $66.95

Various locations throughout Melbourne

Unbuckle your seatbelts (after parking in your pre-booked bay obvs) and prepare to be dazzled by Asia TOPA aka the Asia-Pacific Triennial of Performing Arts. For the first time ever, hundreds of artists from all over Asia will come to our shores to celebrate their sometimes unpredictable creative prowess and perform their best work yet. The National Ballet of China, Tao Theatre Dance and Taiwanese rapper Aristophanes will be among the acts, and you can expect to see loads more events unravelling all over the city, like the Asia Pop Courtyard spinning Korean pop at the Immigration Museum.

When: 13th February to 6th March

So come on Melbournites, Book-A-Bay then go get a healthy dose of bloody culture!
