Winter’s Hottest Hair Trends

By Iro Kotsimbos - 09 May 2014

The temperature has well and truly dropped in Melbourne, so in addition to dragging out the winter wardrobe and stocking up on super hydrating face cream like there's no tomorrow, we'll be heading straight to the hairdresser for a deep conditioning treatment and a new season style change. That's right, it's time to kiss the summery highlights goodbye and welcome rich winter tones.

Let's not lie though, choosing exactly what to do with our mops for the winter season is a challenge, so we sat down with the hair experts at Meddlers to talk all things follicle related… and to pick their brains for the hottest hair tips and trends for winter 2014!

Why Meddlers, you ask? Centrally located in super stylish South Yarra, Meddlers is a sleek and chic hair salon offering cutting edge styling services to both women and men. From cutting, colouring and style consultations, to formal and event up-dos, hair conditioning treatments and men's shaving, Meddlers take the fuss (and in my case, self-inflicted injuries courtesy of a curling wand) out of doing your hair, whether you're just after a day-to-day style or something reeeeal fancy. And with over 20 years experience between the team, Meddlers know a thing or two about hair!

So, want in on winter's hottest hair tips and trends? Read on, dear Urban Listers…

Fringe Benefits

According to Chris Dunkley, owner and director of Meddlers and Men+Co, "A new season is a new chance to do something different, so this season my biggest hair tip is to take the plunge and try something that's out of your comfort zone. I'm a big fan of fringes for winter 2014; whether it's a full, blunt fringe, something a little more sideswept, or a Jane Birken-esque whispy fringe – just do it and own the look!"

TUL Tip: After working in salons and on catwalks around the world, it's little wonder Chris is on speed-dial for the well-dressed ladies and gents of South Yarra. With an eye for what's hot and what's not, you can rest assured that an appointment with Chris will leave you with one of the best haircuts of your life!

Well Groomed Gents

Founder and Senior Stylist at Meddlers, Gary McKenzie is considered by many to be one of Melbourne's best hairdressers, and has some words of wisdom for the fellas –"Guys, this season it's all about making an effort with your hair and keeping well groomed. Say goodbye to scruffy (ahem, lazy) styles and use gel, wax or pomade to for a look that's slick and suave. I'm a big fan of the American Crew Classic Defining Paste and Classic Pomade, they're great for keeping you looking perfectly groomed all day."

TUL Tip: Not only is Gary an award winning hair stylist who's been around the world and back to learn the tricks of the trade, he's also a long-term ambassador for American Crew who brings his amazing styling and cutting skills to Meddlers.

Go Dark

Sorry ladies, but Meddlers' super stylist Suzanne Fisher says it's time to break up with ombre! "This winter I want the ladies of Melbourne to lose the look – really, it's had its moment," she insists.

"My tip is to get more creative and embrace rich colours – think burgundy, dark chocolate, and raven, almost black, tones. Whatever colour you go for, make sure you maintain it with Kevin Murphy Angel Wash; it's perfect for fine, coloured hair."

TUL Tip: Making her mark at Meddlers for over 3 years, Suzanne has a wealth of knowledge and pro-skills to make you weep. You could walk into Meddlers with hair that can only be described as borrrrring, and walk out with Victoria's Secret worthy locks thanks to Suzanne's colour and styling wizardry. A representative of Kevin Murphy, Suzanne is one of the best hair stylists in Melbourne if you're after a babin' change in colour.

Long & Luscious

A fan of sexy, swishy and healthy long tresses, Meddler's Jessica O'Connor predicts Melbourne women will be keeping the length this winter. "Now that cooler weather has arrived and you don't have worry about hot days that make your hair stick to the back of your neck, you can fiiiinally embrace long, luscious locks," she says.

"It's all about the prep though – make sure you use a volumising shampoo and conditioner like the Eleven Australia 'I Want Body' duo first (or 'Smooth Me Now' if your hair is frizz-prone), before applying the 'I Want Body' foam from roots to ends. Once blow dried, grab a wide barrel curling wand and tong random sections throughout, until you get that 'perfectly imperfect' look."

TUL Tip: After running her own salon for over 10 years, Jessica is now making waves (quite literally) at Meddlers with her superior styling ability…we've never met someone who works a pair of tongs or creates a braided up-do quite like Jessica! Whether you're after a sleek formal up-do or relaxed bouncy waves, Jessica is you go-to hairdresser this side of the Yarra.
