The arrival of our (second) favourite season goes hand in hand with the perfect excuse to restock your vanity with spring beauty essentials… but with so many products and so little time, where are we meant to start?
We looked to the spring ’15 runways for inspiration and found that undone polish was trending among many of our favourite designers. Think tousled waves spotted at Chloe to radiant natural complexions at Chanel. Of course, it just wouldn’t be spring without a few statement painterly pops of colour either. The usual suspects such as hues of pink and pastel get a big tick yet again this season, but there are some surprises in the mix, such as statement eye shadow shades.
Here are some of the prettiest beauty trends you should consider getting on board with this spring…
Embrace undone waves and messy braids
It’s every lazy girls dream—perfect, bouncy blow-dries are out and tousled, relaxed waves and messy braids are in. Which means you can sleep in for a little longer because you can just let your naturally dry. Win! Invest in some styling products that will keep frizz at bay, because crazy cat lady is not the look we’re going for at the moment (next year might be a different thing, we’ll keep you posted).
Try Oribe Aprés Beach Wave & Shine Spray, it’s a new-gen sea salt spray that gives even the straightest hair a little movement. Delivering texture and hold, without the stickiness or crunchiness. Add a little grit to your stands to ensure loose braids stay in place whilst smoothing frizz with Redken Braid Aid.
Try sherbet nail shades
Sure, you could swap your dark, vampy winter shades for a fail-safe nude polish. Or you could also try hues that mimic popsicles, poolside soirees and cotton candy, like pastel pink, lilac and duck-egg blue… Ummm, cute?! If you’ve seen it all before, don this seasons signature shades but with a new nail shape or grown-up nail art such as negative space feature nails.
We love Smith & Cult polishes; they glide on ever so smoothly and have the glossiest finish. Our shades of choice? Pastel Peach, an opaque apricot hue with just a touch of pink or She Said Yeah, a creamy periwinkle purple. Call 1300 725 122 for your nearest Smith & Cult stockist.
The cat-eye eyeliner is back!
Like it was ever really gone anyway. Perfect black liquid liner adds an undeniable air of elegance to any look. Feeling adventurous? Try liquid liner 2.0 and line your lids in a pastel shade, such as baby blue as seen on the runway at Christian Dior. Now to try and keep each eye even… in colour! It’s near impossible. We know.
Rock a power pout
Swap your winter red and fail-proof nude pout for a lively lip shade that packs a serious punch, because nothing says spring like lips that mimic the shade of fresh blooms and berries. Try a neon scarlet, punchy fuchsia or an opaque coral shade.
Urban Decay Matte Revolution Lipstick in Menace (a super bright pink) is one of the longest lasting lipsticks we’ve ever tried. It has a matte finish but isn’t drying. If you prefer a creamier formula, cult-status YSL Rogue Pur Couture are celebrating a number of new shades for Spring ’15, like Le Orange, a statement shade that sits somewhere between scarlet red and tangerine.
Let your skin shine
Supercharged skin is always in, but this spring, it makes comeback in a big way. Dare to bare a fresh, radiant (gasp, foundationless) face through mastering your skincare regime. If you’ve already perfected your skincare regime (we salute you!) and are drinking plenty of water but aren’t being rewarded with a glowing complexion, try investing in a Clarisonic. It’s a miracle cleansing brush that will gently buff away dull winter skin and reduce pore size while it’s at it.
If you’re not quite ready to leave the house bare faced, Too Faced brand new Born This Way Foundation is almost undetectable. It minimises unwelcome T-zone shine and is enriched ingredients such as coconut water and rose extract to hydrate skin all day long.
Try plum or blue shadow
Whether you love it, or hate it, it’s all about a purple haze and sapphire blue skies on your eyelids. All shades of purple from lilac to lavender were seen on the runway for designers such as Vera Wang and are a colour of choice for celebs such as Katy Perry and Mila Kunis, while all things blue have been spotted on models left, right and centre at New York Fashion Week. If this is all a little too much for you, try simply lining your eyes with a shade of blue or purple and channel whimsical and pretty, not 70’s dress up.
Go for ‘bronde’
The term ‘bronde’ was coined to describe that perfect hair colour that sits between a glossy brunette and a sun-kissed blonde, think J.Lo and Jessica Alba’s locks. Don’t let your hair have all the fun, try mimicking the shade to create the ultimate smoky eye. Trade your charcoal and silvery smoky eye for rich chocolate browns and golden taupe shades with a touch of shimmer. Who ever said brown was boring? Conveniently achieve this trend with a single palette—Urban Decay’s latest, the Smoky Eyeshadow Palette.
Opt for all things sheer
It’s called watercolour makeup and it means that you can trade-in your finishing powder and matte foundation to let your natural beauty shine. The look? Quintessential spring; rosy cheeks, bee-stung lips and dewy cheekbones. Think water-based cosmetics such as cheek tints, lip stains and sheer highlighters. We love Josie Maran’s au-naturale cosmetics range that is infused with Argan oil, from shimmering illuminators to transparent crème cheek tints. Available exclusively at Mecca.
