BEAMS Arts Festival is Back

By Florence Tan
7th Sep 2015

Sydney’s most colourful block party is back for its 4th year. Coinciding with the International Year of Light, the BEAMS Arts Festival on the 19th September promises to be one bright night in Chippendale.

Centred around the theme of Phenomena, Festival Director, Nicky Ginsberg is filling the alleyways of Chippendale with a spectrum of creative talent that well and truly think outside the square. With a focus on multi-disciplinary artists, the works on show combine elements of video, light, sound and imagery to immerse passers-by and captivate audiences.

This year’s program is beaming with high-wattage talent. Following on from the buzz of their newly released single, Sydney based group, Artefact, will be teaming their dream-like sound with 3D projections to create a performance for all the senses. Other live musical acts to check out include reggae group, Frieda’s Boss and the Soul Residue series at Botch House shining a light on electronic artists such as Heavy Hands and Three Mandarins.

After listening to some tunes, it’s time to get down and boogie. dancekool will get you started as they celebrate the partnership of movement and sound with each dancer donning lights that react to the sounds made by the beat makers and DJs.

Feel like taking a walk on the art-side? Well then head on over to the 50m long graffiti wall on O’Connor Street, led by Scott Marsh and a host of Sydney’s most recognised street artists who well and truly turn the mundane into the spectacular.

If you’re one to love getting hands on with your art, then be sure to visit Stephanie Bhim’s Pop Sensation installation. With the aim of trying to pop the awkward silence, visitors are encouraged to write a message onto a piece of paper which is then inserted into a balloon with an LED light. Watch as your message drifts up into the sky and, grab and burst another’s to see what words (thoughtful and otherwise) lie inside. It’s like message in a bottle but with a much faster response time.

So if you’ve been feeling a little culturally deprived come winter’s end, then the BEAMS Arts Festival should be high on your to-do list. Mixing the industrial with the surreal, it’s a kaleidoscopic night not to be missed.
