When it comes to looking after your hair—styling, colouring and maintaining your bob, bangs, fade or balayage—it’s actually easier than you think to choose environmentally-friendly over environmentally-disastrous.
While hair salons traditionally use lots of harsh chemicals and produce even more waste in their day-to-day operations, there’s a movement within the industry to change regular operations and put the environment, animal welfare and the health of the community front of mind.
“Australian hairdressers are surrounded by nature. It should be in our instinct and core value to pay it back to the environment,” says founder of Darlinghurst’s QUE Colour salon, Monique Mcmahon.
Here we’ve gathered a list of the most sustainable hair salons in Sydney, most of which work to recycle over 90% of their waste as part of a commitment to the Australian Sustainable Salons program. They don’t skimp on service either: you can expect your hair to be in its best condition yet, while your conscience is totally clear.
Here are seven of the best sustainable hair salons in Sydney.
The Sustainable Salon
These guys are bringing a whole new meaning to sustainable. Absolutely everything from top to bottom at The Sustainable Salon is environmentally-friendly. For example, the salon uses coconut shells as tint and colour bowls, LED lighting, biodegradable towels, and tonnes of plant-life around to oxygenate the salon. On top of this you can expect real magic from Diego, the owner who has a sixth sense about what will work for your hair.
QUE Colour is another inner-city green salon deeply invested in limiting their impact on the world around them. According to QUE, choosing environmentally-friendly colours, conditioners, shampoos and styling products won’t result in substandard hair—but it can make a difference in safeguarding the environment. The salon is a Sustainable Salons partner, and $2 from each service is donated to environmental causes. They also stock Christophe Robin—a luxurious range of natural, sustainable hair products that will (without a doubt) change your life.
Mr Burrows & Co
Mr Burrows Hair is home to one of Sydney’s top colourists Amanda Tua, who specialises in unicorn themed dyes but also can rock the hell out of a bright and creamy sun-kissed look. Being an environmentally sustainable salon that recycles around 95% of their wastage daily, this is the holy grail of the Inner West. Along with this, cheeseboards and espresso martinis mid trim are the norm here.
This Surry Hills salon has brought to the table a European-styled environmentally-friendly place that has been around for 15 years. Serendipity Atelier is vegan-friendly, palm-oil free, ammonia-free and recycles almost 100% of their colour bottles and other packaging. In addition to these sustainable practices, they donate their unused products to women’s shelters. And rumour has it—their head massages are the holy grail.
PALOMA is run by major hair talent Paloma Garcia and is loved by the fashion set. It’s also another salon deeply committed to sustainability, and recycles 98% of their waste. Known for their express blow dry services, if you turn up with freshly washed locks, you’ll walk out in 20 minutes with a fully transformed look. You can also book in for a 75-minute one-on-one masterclass about how to get your hair salon-ready at home.
For the past three years, CROWN Hair has adopted a 95% recycle rate, recycling their aluminium foils, colour tubes and other products. These changes have allowed them to create less of an environmental impact on the community, on the modus operandi “every cut and colour matters”. Their hair masks are reasonably priced too, filled with natural and organic ingredients and leave your hair feeling silky smooth.
Only recently joining forces with Sustainable Salons to become an eco-friendly business, Esstudio Galleria is now recycling 95% of their waste. Expect old-school barbershop decor vibes, complete with the traditional chairs and an antique chandelier. Their hair packages are of amazing value and you can also choose a relaxing spa day beauty treatment while you’re getting that super-relaxing head massage.
