Welcome to Sydney’s newest specialty coffee and food bar - The Grind & Co. It’s hip, it’s trendy, and it’s built from a 20-foot shipping container. Throw in some biodynamic essene bread and you’ve got a winning combination for an inner city hood like Alexandria, yet husband and wife team Rani and Christine Ousman are anything but formulaic.
The pair have run Deluxe & Co, a premium mobile coffee, alcohol and juice bar, for the past four years while they dreamed of setting up shop in more permanent digs.
“Deluxe & Co was definitely great prep for this,” says Christine Ousman. “The experience we gained through our catering company shaped our standards and set the bar high in terms of what we will and won’t serve.”
Located in Alexandria’s Heritage Business Park, the sprawling shipping container/food bar seats 40 and is part of the pair’s focus on being fully self-contained—a philosophy that is reinforced with 100% sustainable coffee beans, vertical herb gardens to service the kitchen and locally sourced produce.
Ousman came up with the concept about twelve months ago, but says finding the right space was more challenging. “Heritage Business Park was the first site we saw and I just felt it was a great little pocket for starting something new.”
At the centre of the bar sits a sleek mirrored copper La Marzocco 3 coffee machine, where the focus is on producing quality coffee using sister brands, Deluxe & Co premium blend, as well as dabbling in cold drop and iced brews.
Food-wise, you’re in for an array of sandwiches, summer salads, wraps, and sweet bites all made on site daily. The Ousmans have concentrated on catering to their surrounds, which means studying the corporate crowd in their natural environment and coming up with fabulous food events to, well, help them escape the other kind of grind. The result is a schedule chock-full of BBQ Fridays, meaty Middle Eastern feasts, burger days, and sausage sizzles with fresh lemonade to boot!
